That's the impression I had of the new MINI Countryman when I had a sneak peak at 5pm yesterday before the 6pm launch unveiling.

It's a lot, lot bigger than the old one, and the rear legroom was very impressive as was the boot size.

Interior seemed to be very high quality too.

Looks not 100% convincing but a MINI might get away with it.

All in all very impressed

A friend had an invitation to a MINI Countryman event this weekend pop up on facebook.

Sadly for the dealership the car was the least interesting thing in the accompanying photo.

iv e not looked at one, but from what I've seen I think I'd like it.  Not sure it will be worth the asking price though, high £30's for a well equipped S.

Yes, exactly.

RRP on my mother's old-model Countryman Cooper S All4 automatic was £28.5k with around £4k of that being options (metallic paint, Chilli pack, colour screen, piano black trim, few other bits and bobs).

The new Cooper S All4 automatic retails at £28k without any options fitted, or over £32k with the necessary options added to equalise the spec to Mum's (e.g. the new model doesn't get the sliding rear seat as standard - it's now a £300 option).

So the like-for-like difference is quite significant - especially when you factor in available discounts - over £8k.

She's picking hers up from the dealership tomorrow.

... and here's me thinking that a Kuga AWD is a bit on the pricey side at around £30k !

I drove a couple of these today - a bog standard Cooper 1.5 three cyl petrol manual and a Cooper SD All4 auto.

Both were impressive enough. The interior is nicely conceived, good quality, spacious and comfortable.

The three pot does a very respectable job of moving a fairly hefty car along but I thought the diesel felt a bit unwilling until I noticed it only had only done 100 miles. It's well matched by the eight speed auto.

The ride and handling are a great improvement on what I recall about the outgoing one. Even on runflat shod 19s it's firm but never jarring and in the fat sidewalled 17s is positively cushy. In both cases it steers sharply, grips well, resists roll and contains body movements on lumpy lanes nicely. Even on wet roads it immediately makes you confident in how it's going to behave.

Overall it still manages to feel like a MINI but it is very expensive once you add the essential Chili pack and a few other niceties.

How does the price compare to an X1?

From a brief view I think I'd take the Countryman over an X1.

This I guess is liable to be key improvement over the 6spd auto in the old version. We've become so used to automatics now turning in better performance and economy figures than their manual equivalents, that it was rather a surprise to discover this was not the case for the outgoing Countryman where the automatic is adrift the manual across the board.

An X1 2.0i MSport (195bhp) is about £33k before options.

I quite like the look of the new one. However I am sure there will be some hefty discount in the wings shortly or stacks of pre registered ones at those price levels.
