Lexus RC

I had a good look around one of these at the weekend at a local shopping centre and in many ways it is impressive but in others, seriously disappointing.

The leather seats and dash (and in particular the leather strap to pull the front seat back forward to allow rear access) was a class above anything other than the likes of a 6 or 7 series or perhaps an S Class. The steering wheel felt a nice size in the hands and the instruments were all clear and logical with switches that felt very well built, silky in operation and indestructible (think Mercedes from 30 yrs ago).

However in this particular car there was the strangest looking slab of plastic stuck in the central consul which houses the upgraded stereo and a few other bits and pieces. To my eyes it looked totally aftermarket although my wife didn't think it looked odd at all. You can see it here:

This car was in a colour not dis-similar to BMW's Carbon Black, so it had shades of blue and purple when caught in the light from certain angles. Overall I think it is a really good looking car, even with the "Alien" front grill.

There is nowhere near as much space in the back as the 4 series and for us that would be a deal breaker but if you didn't need the rear space very often, it is a seriously nice place to sit.

The boot is reasonably large but again not a patch on the 4 Series for useable space - there is no way my golf clubs would fit across the boot as they do at the moment and I would need to fold the rear seats down.

The car they had on show was the hybrid but I was massively disappointed to learn that it is 2.5 litres and musters all of 181hp. It also has a CVT gearbox which shuts another door as far as I am concerned. The salesman told me that they do a 2 litre petrol which is quicker but having scoured the Lexus website I can find no mention of the power output or the fuel economy - do they have something to hide?

The figures are all there for the RC-F but starting at 60K it is a bit pricey (in fact much too pricey for me).

I like the way it looks but it doesn't appear that the engine choice is going to get anyone really excited. When allied to the cramped rear and odd stereo fitment I think I will give this one a miss although I admit it will still turn my head when I see one. I see a blue metallic RC-F every now and again and it looks great.

The 2.0t RC is 241bhp and 350Nm of torques. Still not particularly fast.

The RC-F is the one to go for with 471bhp from its V8.

It's a great looking car but the main problem is its weight blunting the sporting pretensions. I see what you mean about that bit of plastic on the dash too.

I really like the RC. Sat in one at Geneva last year and loved the cabin. The RC-F however I really don't like, far too bling in the extreme.

There have only ever been three Lexuses that remotely appeal to me. And none of them are this one.

You like a sharp looking suit but not a sharp looking car!

I was wondering what the 3 Lexus' were and would hazard a guess at:

IS-F
LFA
Old SC

I'm not sure many of my suits are what anyone would describe as "sharp"! If anything they are very conservative. Just good quality and well-fitted...

GS300 - the original Giugiaro-designed version from the early '90s (a neighbour has a black P-reg one and it has aged remarkably well)
IS300 - the original version in Sportcross guise

I certainly would. I sat in the LC at Geneva yesterday, and the interior is outstanding - and that was after sitting in sundry Rolls-Royces, McLarens and Aston Martins. Looks great outside too, in a confident not-copying-the-Europeans way.

I'm right with you on the IS300 Sportcross. If only they'd kept putting out stuff like that.
