Just a feeler

My Mum's partner's BMW (316i Compact E36 Auto) might have gone west yesterday so he'll might be looking for something new.

He's 86 and fairly doddery on his legs so much as he wants another BMW I'm not sure thats the best option.

So, suggestions for a car which meets the badge snobbery need, is an auto and is probably smaller than a 3 series for ease of parking. Something easy to get into would be good as well.

I'm thinking Audi A3, or maybe Golf Plus (for seat height) but any ideas welcome.

Next stage will then be finding one in the right condition.

Budget is a bit variable, can afford to spend but doesn't want to.

My mum's registered disabled and has a normal Golf auto. The dealer was able to use a laptop to alter the steering for her to make it lighter. (and it is very light indeed, I drove it once!)

A-Class, not particularly a great car but has the badge and has a high seating position.

3dr automatic A3s are not hard to find - easier than the equivalent Golf and really no costlier. I'd go for one of those. Safe, smart and unexciting, and with 3 doors access is easy too - perfect I'd say.

A late model Mk1 A3 1.8 SE on a "52" or "03" would be what I'd look for.

Oddly enough I'm just looking at reviews of that and the B Class on What Car - as you say, right badge, sensible car (not exciting in anyway though!)

I hear Volvos are good for old people

How about an S60 ?

...and if he goes for a 1.6 auto then you can rest assured he won't be going over 50 because if the manual can't pull shit out of a squatting dog then the auto must be worse.

Merc A150 multitronic gets the same conclusion based on my experience of the manual

Why not do what everyone over the age of 70 does round here and get a Hyundai I10! - the local dealer must be caning it in - his latest convert is my octogenarian uncle who's bought one this week after a lifetime of Rover 2000s and BMW 3 series. It seems ease of getting in and out and getting it into parking spaces is now the prime buying consideration.

A good point. Is it so far west that the scrappage thing is out of the question?

No, but I think he'd rather a 5 yr old Audi/Merc than a new Hyundai.

I hear the Foetus RS has a nice high seating position!
Nice Guy Eddie

He should do what all old people do and buy a Honda Jazz.

Me too, the Hyundai was not a serious suggestion, although I can see the appeal for someone who just wants something to get from A to B with ease.

One of the other 70yrs+ buyers was a friend who's car had broken down (near the Hyundai dealer). He phoned his wife to explained what had happened. When he was much longer than she expected she phoned him back to see what was happening, he said he'd got fed up of waiting for the AA so had walked to the Hyundai dealer and got a new car instead - a radical solution, but being a bit impatient myself, I like his style.

A Honda Jazz sounds a good suggestion. The seating position is perfect for those who are older and the auto version seems to be popular. Is Honda a premium enough badge though.
