It'll blow over...I hope.

I think you'll be alright as it's unlikely the car or the colour were the same and it could have been anywhere in the country.
As a back up, look through your phone and see if you took any pictures on June 20th. In addition to the date stamp iPhones, and many other phones also include GPS metadata in the file so could prove useful in proving your proximity to the alleged event.

Hopefully that's all you hear of it.  Fingers crossed.

When this sort of thing happens my second thought is "human or computer error, it'll get sorted, nothing to worry about". My first thought is "glitch in the matrix or some sort of sliding doors moment". Second thought tends to be right more often than not.

I'm sure it will.

They will have to prove the car was involved which will be impossible. Your evidence (straight car, wife in work, etc.) is greater than theirs.

My mum got a parking ticket once from a place she had never been, wrong reg again. Hence wardens now take photographs!

My first thought nowadays is 'Scam'.

What you need is vehicle tracking

I wouldn't get too excited (and yes I've had the Direct Line wrong number thing) - it's a standard thing when you talk to an insurance company to provide data to prove who you are, so I wouldn't have got too excited about that either.

With 7 characters in a number plate, there are so many chances of someone misunderstanding handwriting, writing it down wrong at the scene of the accident or simply mis-keying - there must be genuine mistakes of this kind all the time - far more than scam attempts I would think.

They are an insurance company. They scam in mysterious ways...
