Industry Award

A little self indulgent I’m afraid, so apologies in advance……

We've been awarded for our environmental work!

It's not an environmental award as such, but with a 25% increase in vehicle fill we have taken a lot of vehicles off the road and made a dent in the 1.2m+ gallons of fuel we use a year.  Obviously the project was put in place to deliver cost savings for the business, but the environmental impact is a nice bonus.

Anyway, it was my project and I had a lot of direct involvement in the detail, so I’m pretty chuffed.  I was just sorry that I was on holiday and missed out on the (very lengthy) celebrations.  It’s our (HB Distribution Team) fourth CILT (Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport) award in 4 years, I have no idea what I’m going to do for next year, but the pressure is already on....

The other finalists were Arriva Trains Wales and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, so if we’d lost to either of them I would have been gutted!!

Annual Awards For Excellence - Transport Policy and Planning

For outstanding achievement in Transport Planning which may include:
•  Improved methods used for planning, development and evaluation of policies, plans or projects
•  A particular outstanding policy, plan or project which has been adopted for implementation
•  Improvement in the quality of transport and local environment through implementation of a specific scheme
And the winner is...

DHL/Homebase

DHL and Homebase recognised that with fuel and other costs rising and the economy struggling it was important for the business to look at every possible way of controlling and reducing costs.  The project set very challenging targets for vehicle fill rates in order to reduce costs and the impact on the environment.  A clear plan of action was developed to deliver cost, operational and environmental benefits and achieved a 25% increase in vehicle utilisation.  The approach has wider applicability within the industry and DHL and Homebase are to be congratulated for their comprehensive approach and joint working.

Oh and I'd like to add that this reduction in Co2 hasn't cost the motorist a penny

Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport?   You mean truck drivers?

Congratulations anyway.  Did the company use it an an ISO:14001 environmental project or target?

Is the prize a weekend in a Little Chef, selection of used jazz-mags and a free-pass to role ciggies whilst doing 56mph in a variety of motorway lanes?

Congratulations, I often wonder how moving stuff around can be done smarter - as a matter of interest, how much do those streamlined trailers that Marks and Sparks (amongst others I'm sure) save on fuel?
Martin

Thanks guys.

We have ISO 14001 in a couple of our DC's, but (in my opinion) it's a bit too much of a paper filling exercise and doesn't drive the best behaviours in all areas.

The M&S 'teardrop' trailers don't really save a great deal and what they do save is outweighed by the reduction in capacity.  They might increase your mpg by 5-10% but you'll have more vehicles on the road!!

Driver training is the best way to increase mpg, but we've done

As it says, we now get 25% more product (well, cube of product) onto each vehicle, so have reduced our mileage travelled by a similar amount.  That's a lot more that you'd get with any of the streamlined trailers.

We don't get a prize, but even a used Jazz Mag!!!
PG

Well done that man. It's always nice to be recognised for your efforts.

Congratulations. I've seen some trucks using extra tall trailers that can fit two levels of cages in them. Seems a good way to save fuel but amazing that no-one thought of it before.

We've got about 35 of them.  They are expensive if you don't have proper unloading facilities at store as you need a tail lift and a complicated hydraulic moving deck.  They do give you decent savings though and is part of what we've done, but you need to be able to fill them without driving miles out of your way to drop at numerous stores.

Why didn,t you replace all company cars with   bicycles ?
