I worried my car!

I was approaching a set of traffic lights last night which were green for me, when an ambulance with lights flashing appeared at the junction to the left (he was too late with his siren which he only switched on as I saw him). At the same time my lights went to amber when I was at that "do I or don't I distance" but given the circumstances and nothing behind me, I stood on the brakes and stopped on a sixpence with no ABS involvement. However my hazards lights went on and some warning light appeared on the dashboard.

I've never managed to get such a reaction from the car before. Am I just a gentle braker normally or does anyone else scare their car regularly?

Full stoppers are for emergency or track use only, I reckon!

Mine has the City Brake function where by it drops anchor if it thinks you're going to hit something or someone. I've achieved this three times, first when it saved me from slamming into the back of a Suziki Swift, second when a van pulled out in front of me on a roundabout and finally when I was sourcing a parking space on a verge which required me to take a bit of a run up. Volvo clearly thought I was going to slam it into a fence and did the brakes for me.

The City Braking thingy gets in a panic on mine if you are approaching  parked cars that are technically ahead but you will be steering round them. The car doesn't know that and then sounds a panicky warning and flashes red lights in the HUD.

The Qashqai has the radar controlled system where, if it thinks you are approaching the car in front a little too quickly, it gives three beeps. If you continue to ignore this warning it then applies the brakes.

At which point you take your eyes off the road to see what the flashing lights are and promptly crash into the thing that the system is warning you about and you were going to avoid anyway as you're a reasonably competent driver with a pair of eyes?

Thing is, I daren't test the Collision Warning System or the City Safety systems. What if I ignore them and they don't work?!

Up to now I have just ignored it.

My city safety thingy save me once when my attention was taken by a rather attractive female posterior loading something into her car boot at the side of the road. I didn't notice that the car in front had stopped to turn right, but my car did.....

My car does a funny thing when the voodoo cruise is on, and you are rapidly gaining on something then decide to manually override its own braking. It pre-warms the brakes when it things you might use them in a hurry - or takes up the slack in the system anyway - meaning when I brake in this scenario I always get more braking than I anticipated.

Otherwise, despite my car having a faintly ridiculous 150mph-0 time ( I forget the specifics, Autocar did it) I don't think I have done full emergency braking in it - I'm not sure if it has that annoying auto-hazards feature...
