I'll take the Michelin's then....

We can debate tyres for hours and decide what we do or do not want for our next set of tyres. But when you're away from home, you've knackered a front tyre and tomorrow Mrs PG needs the car to start a 500 mile two day trip, it's more a case of "OK, if you can't match what's on there, what have you got in a pair that will fit?".

So, I now have a pair of Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's on the front rather than replacement P Zero's. The right front had to be replaced after a strange vibrating noise on the motorway revealed that a chunk had come out of the inner shoulder. The left front only had 2.5mm left so it's not a fiscal disaster, but it might be a real one if I spear off the road into a tree on the way home tonight.

Opinions on tyre review sites vary. BMW owners all seem to say they are shit, other make owners seem to like them. One S3 owner raved they were the best tyre he's ever fitted. We shall see.

Anybody else got any experience of them? They are on, so it's a bit academic in one way, except fore-warned is fore-armed perhaps.

PS2s are THE tyre of choice for E39 M5s assuming money no object.

I paid £265 for the two fronts (225/45 R17's) including balancing and tracking. I reckon it was about £30 more than P Zero's would have been.

That doesn't seem too bad. Whenever I look at MyTyres the Michelins always seem to be about 30-40% more than the Goodyears I've gone on to look at.

They were fitted to the front of my Bora when I had the 17'' alloys fitted and I was fairly impressed with them. Being the same size as your ones, they were super sticky in the dry and gripped really well in the wet.

I did find them quite noisy however.

I had Michelins on my VRS they lasted for ages, over 20k. Obviously wasn't doing burn outs at TLGPs but didn't drive like a nun either.

PS2's were the "cost no object" favourite with the Alfa GTA crowd as well, and were well placed in tyre reviews in recent years. Good tyres - just not cheap.

Thanks all for your comments. The front tyres are probably worth more than the car right now then.

It's done 81k and is due a service in about a month. I'm at the "twist or stick" stage I reckon...

I know that place.

I spent a load of cash on the Fiat in February for a clutch, radiator and cambelt change.
Since then it's also needed a service and both front springs.

In hindsight I probably should've stripped/scrapped it and put the money towards another, lower mileage one that had already had the work done.

Still, I've had the car 5 1/2 years now so at least I know how it's been treated wheras buying another one would be a bit of a mystery.
