I bet this really shifts

Shame they puffed out of using the 3.0 six though.

But who is in charge of writing the news articles ?, they obviously know shit all about 80s Mercs

Maybe but I'll reply in this thread......Sportline? Used to homologate? I thought it was just an 80s/90s Merc version of Audi's "S-Line" trim level....

Nice idea but couldn't they have butchered an old 190 D rather than a 2.6 Sportline?
Guitar Zero

Yeah I know - 2.6 190Es are lush

One of Setright's favourite ever cars apparently

My step-grandparents had one in Smoke Silver. Drove it once - very smooth.
BeN

They clearly mixed it up with the 190E Evolution, which was also mentioned in the press release.

Tsk tsk.

I'm at a complete loss as to the point of this exercise?

I can understand a man in a shed doing it, but the manufacturer??
BeN

Apparantly, it's to "demonstrate the progress diesel technology has made in the past 20 years."

Guitar Zero

I think it's brilliant - should have used the six pot diesel though.

Even so - 369 lbs ft in a car weighing less than a Focus !!. That engine can push the new E-Class to 100 mph in 20 seconds - just think how fast and economical that 190e is.

I bet if Mercedes refurbished old 190Es, W124s and W126s and put the latest powertrains in, they would sell.
simonp

Not to me, they wouldn't!

Doesn't that just go to prove how much weight cars have put on? A mid sized Merc weighs less than a current Focus.
Matt

AMG 55 engine in a W124 shell, please.

I heard a rumbling V8 noise the other night and expecting an older muscle car type, it was a silver SL55.

I bet a Focus is wider, taller and just as long.

and I know which one I'd rather have a crash in - that Merc would get torn to bits by the latest Panda, never mind a Focus.
