How has ISO performance improved?

I just wondered how technology has improved since I got my 20D and as some of you lot have shiny new cameras I wondered if
comparing ISO performance would show how things have improved. So here are some shots taken with my 20D.

The first 4 show the shot taken at ISO 100, 400, 1600 and 3200, nothing has been done to these. I don't think that noise is too much
of an issue here.

The next 4 shots show 100% crops at the various ISO's. You can see noise sneaking in.

The last 2 shots are ISO 1600 and 3200 100% crops with "noise suppression" and "colour noise suppression" in Raw Shooter
Essentials set to 30. Other packages will no doubt be more effective.

Anyone like to post ISO comparison shots from their camera?

PS - All shots taken at f3.2 in a room (dimly) lit by one 60w bulb. (I'm not made of money you know.)

Thanks to just the 8.2 megapixels on the sensor, I bet it's a heck of a better image than the stupid 50D puts out with double the resolution on the same size sensor.

If you bear with me I will give this a shot.

I think that they've gone too far with the 50D. I haven't tried one but the numbers don't look good and I'm worried about diffraction at least theoretical starting at f7.6, at least mine gets to f10.6. Diffraction at f7.6 could be an issue when going for extreme DoF, maybe when using hyper focal focusing.

Great stuff! Should be interesting.

You'll have to ignore the white balance as I forgot to alter it.

Cropped will follow shortly.

OK, Here they are:

It's interesting that the noise only becomes an issue at 1600 and 3200.  Noise reduction was on.

The camera is a 6.2MP Konica Minolta Dynax 7D.

They look pretty good.

Has any noise reduction been done, either in camera or on the pc?

What was the camera?

The camera's noise reduction was on and it's a KM Dynax 7D.

I seem to remember when I got it the reviews seemed to think the camera's processing was pretty good.  I would imagine that if I turned the NR off then you would see it at 800 as well.
Matt

I'd say the adage about less megapixels are preferable is proven by these two cameras. If you see reviews on sites such as DPReview and the utter joke some modern cameras of all types are on anything above 400 you'd want to seek out an older model and spend the rest on glass.

As much as I'd love a 5DII, I hope my 20D lasts me a long time.
