How fast

Reading through CAR mag's comparative test of hybrids I wonder how the Passat e can manage 0-60 in 7 and a bit seconds and 140 flat out while the similarly powerful (and powered) Mondeo, that weighs a decent chunk less, can only manage 9 and a bit seconds and 119mph?

I suspect a typo.

It's the difference between fitting AA and AAA batteries I guess.

It's the Ford Effect, as seen on the Focus RS.

No typo - the Fords figures look surprisingly poor, however it may be that it travels further/longer/has better battery life in cooler temperatures than the Passat as a result of Ford protecting it in a different way.

EDIT

Having looked at the spec of the Mondeo hybrid, it's basically a Pruis-type solution of an electric motor attached to an otherwise unremarkable N/A engine (2.0) pushing through a traditional slusher - torques are 173NM (127lb/ft) which is as remarkable as custard flan. No wonder against a Passat pulling the lovely 1.4TFSi engine attached to the DSG 'box with the electric motor makes to a total of 185lb/ft. The Golf and Passat GTE models seemed to be remarkably popular in the Netherlands.

I won't pretend to understand it but the Mondeo Hybrid 2.0 is an Atkinson Cycle engine which is efficient at the expense of power.

I had one for 6000 miles or so and it is not fast, but has a more than enough for overtakes, though the gearbox isn't the most sophisticated. Nice to glide around silently, and to drive fighting for every last mpg. Some of the numbers through 50 mph motorways were huge and I think I had a lifetime average of nearly 50 which is way better than I am getting with a 2.0 TDCi.

Not perfect but with the Titanium x pack a really nice car.
