Fix It Again TomorrowI posted a couple of months ago about a problem with my Grande Punto popping up days after the warranty expired, well now I think there is another more serious and potentially costly one.There is a deep bassy droning noise that gets worse (louder) with road speed. I've played about with different speeds and throttle openings and it's defo road speed related. It's the 1.9 Turbo diesel. Any ideas? |

Aha, just looked at the advisory notice I got after the service and both off and near side rear wheel bearings have "slight play" would this cause the noise and what's the fix?
I was promised a call back with quotes for the work needed (new tyres and front brakes aswell) but still waiting... Also car was fine before the service!? |

Definitely. The only real fix is new wheel bearings - they're not very expensive though (normally). |

My Clio used to chew through bearings every 12k miles or so. You are not running aftermarket alloys or non-standard wheel sizes because that can make bearings fail faster.
Get them changed all the same. They are not expensive. |

I don't know how many miles it's done (presumably in three years) but the most likely cause, bearing failure, seems a bit premature, unless, of course, during its servicing, the bearings have been overtightened to get rid of the play. | ||||

well 17s used to be pretty big for this size of car but not these days. cheers for the advice, I'll get it booked in. |

The Astra seems to have started the bearing sound, so yet more expense come February. The only upside is the exhaust has been an advisory the last two years and its outer shell came off a few weeks back, so I can get a stainless custom made

I thought the front bearings were going on the Fiat but the noise seems to have mostly gone away with the change to new front tyres.
No doubt another new, strange noise will be along soon to top up my paranoia. |

My Y-plate Megane had a bearing go at just over 18 months old. Don't know how representative of Renault that is, plus it had done over 40,000 hard miles by then, but all the same... |

Won't wheel bearings take a pounding from shite roads and speedbumps?
It can't just be the suspension that gets damaged when you hit a pothole hard enough. |

Crashing into potholes is something it does very well! It's done 32k and does need new fronts so could be both? Presumably things like wheel bearings aren't covered by warranties? |

So long as there is minimal wear in the bearing, any impact through the wheel should have little effect. Any damage would be caused by the sudden impact of the bearing components on one another which should only happen if there is any looseness within the bearing. It follows, of course, that once any wear has started, rough roads would make it get worse more quickly. |

Tyres do tend to get noisier with wear so maybe this is the problem. |

Maybe but it's not a feature I've noticed before on other cars. Maybe it was them spinning up all the time. They really had piss poor grip in all conditions. |
