Finally found a use for...

...the Sport+ mode on the M135i.

Autobahns.

The stiffened suspension and heavier steering suddenly makes complete sense and makes the car much easier and more confidence-inspiring to drive at higher speeds. Otherwise can feel a little nervous.

Must say that thanks to a combination of rain and winter tyres, I called time on a judicious 120mph.

Have a great Italian Christmas Racing. My Sport+ button never gets used in the UK either so maybe I need a continental trip too!

What's the speed rating on winters these days. I recall all the W124s I drove in the late 80s/early 90s got a 180kph sticker on the dash when the winters went on.

So 240kph, meaning you shouldn't max out that M135i 😄

I thought the only difference betwreen sport and sport+ was the relaxing of the stability control?   Not something I'd really want  to do when maxing out the car on a wet motorway.

I'd like to give mine a run on the autobahn, I often wonder how long it would keep pulling strongly for.  I suspect it's at some point beyond 120.....

Enjoy the road trip!

If an old Granada Scorpio Cosworth was still pulling strongly at 120, I'm sure that a 535D would manage this speed without breaking sweat. I suspect that you'd get closer to 160 out of it

I am led to believe that it's still pulling very strongly up to about 125mph and fairly strongly for a bit after that.

Parkers suggests 155mph.....

It would do 155mph without any problem. It is more a case of when you start to feel that the car isn't pulling as strongly. Within the UK speed limits these cars can feel as though they are a caged animal trying to escape. It would just be nice to go to Germany and be able to open them up and feel the same level of acceleration when well over 100.

155 limited? The ZT260 was officially limited to 155mph but that was quite possibly bragging rights, as 155 is that "magic figure". I tried it once (not on the Queen's highway, naturally) as far as 140. To 130 it pulled well. Beyond 130 the acceleration deteriorated markedly and I suspect to hit 155 it would need a lot of flat road and no headwind. Supercharged they can manage well over 160.

Yes, it is limited to 155. Aerodynamics play such an enormous role after about 130 that the additional power needed to overcome it becomes an exponential curve. I have heard that the DMS chipped 35D produces about 380hp and will do over 170mph but again that would need a road so long and straight it becomes totally academic.

This video shows what aerodynamics do to a Cayman S once over about 130mph.
