Fallout New Vegas

I know DC has played this and enjoyed it but I got Fallout New Vegas for Christmas from Tina, at my request, and I just can't get on with it.

I must have played it for at least 5 hours now and I still haven't a clue what's going on, what I have to do and where I'm going, all I seem to do is wander around aimlessly getting shot.

There are alot of menu's and things to change to increase or decrease certain aspects of your character but I just seem to be pressing buttons randomly.

To be fair I'm more of a shove a game in and have a play rather than having to think about what to do too much which would probably make this not the game for me, I did read a few reviews and they are all excellent.

Not for me though I'm afraid, I just hope Tina bought it fairly cheaply as I may sell it.

You are a courier carrying a platinum poker chip to new vegas who gets shot and left for dead.  You are found and brought back from the brink of death by a doctor in Goodsprings.  He will explain the basics to you and you can set your character.  You have got 3 ways which decide what type of character you will be.

S.P.E.C.I.A.L Stands for Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Luck.  These go from 1 to 10 and determine things like how much you can carry (strength) how fast you can run (agilility) and how many points you get when you level up (intelligence)

You only start with enough points to half fill them all, or move it around so some have more and some have less.  For example, its generally advised to put 10(the most for each) into intelligence right at the start to maximise how many skill points you get when level up.

Skill points are sort of the same but more specific and these are what you get when you level up.  If your intelligence is 10 (the highest) then you get 17 skill points every time you level up.  Each skill goes up to 100, the higher the better.  Skills include things like Medicine, small guns, large guns, science etc etc.  There are lots of places where you will need a minimum skill level to progress for example some locks need a minimum lock picking skill of say 50.  There are lots of times too when you can talk your way out of a fight if your speech skill is high enough.

Finally you have perks.  Perks are like a bonus you get every 2nd time you level up.  They get better as you level up and some only unlock if you have the right skills.  So if you havent put any skill points towards 'unarmed' then the powerful unarmed attack perks wont be available.  Some are very useful and do things such as allow you to drink irradiated water without it raising your RADS.

Basically, thats how your character works.  As you kill people you need to loot their body for ammo, guns and things to sell etc.  It works roughly like a FPS but you need to manage your inventory and play smart.  Weapons degrade over time and to keep them in good condition you have to break one weapon to use its parts to fix another, if that makes sense.

Did that help?  My wrists are knackered now!

How complicated? Give me "Shoot first, ask later" any day of the week.

Thanks DC but I shouldn't need that from you, it says something when you have played it for 5 hours and still haven't a clue what's going on or what you have to do.

I've had another look at reviews and on the whole they are very good but there is the odd one in there with similar thoughts to me.

Its an RPG, not a shooter.  There is a certain amount of groundwork you need to do to get yourself set.  You can easily spend 100+ hours exploring the wasteland, if you just want to shoot stuff its the wrong game for you.

I thoroughly enjoyed Red Dead where a bit of thinking is involved and I assumed this would me similar, it is in a way but alot more thinking is needed.

Yes.  Have you played other RPG games?  final fantasy for example?  The main difference with an RPG like this is you have an inventory and can shape the character.

You can gear your guy up with heavy armour and weapons so he trudges along with a minigun at 2mph or you can have him lightening quick, light armour and small weapons or even unarmed, or anywhere in between.

I don't like to think while playing games...

Sounds interesting though.

This.

And the only RPG I'm interested in is a Rocket Propelled Grenade.

My Brother harps on about World Of Warcraft, fuck me that game is dull. It's the new Dungeons and Dragons - a major geekfest.

Not quite as geeky as Gran Turismo, though....

Well I spent a bit more time on it but it's still bloody frustrating, I need to chat to someone in Primm  which is a kind of lawless open prison with the odd guard outside but no matter what I do I just get shot and killed, I've even changed clothes from ones that I stole from a convict that I shot earlier, hoping that they would make me look like one of them, arghhhhhh!

To get a new Sherrif for Primm, that what your trying to do?  The guy you need to speak to is inside, you have to fight your way in.

Yes I need to speak to someone in a building somewhere, can't rememebr the building, but they just seem to carry on coming.

You might be better going away and doing something else, come back when your a higher level.  I remember struggling around there early on.  Head south west and just explore some places.  There is a NCR base near that corner of the map, you will see the giant statues long before you get there.

Is what your looking for.  Remember, every triangle on your map is a location, an empty triangle is a place you haven't explored yet, a solid one is one you have found, i normally go everywhere for completeness sake.

Ok, cheers.
