F1 Game - MonacoSo the F1 circus moves to one of the two tracks on which I've driven. My job is to get through this post without mentioning ... nah, you're not going to catch me out like that; yours is to guess the top eight finishers, the drivers who get pole and fastest lap, and answer the bonus question: how many of the 20 starters will be classified as finishers?
Deadline: Friday 22 May 2359 GMT

Hah, you should see the game they have on another forum I post on - one point for each exactly correct guess, otherwise nada. After five races, their leading player has eight points ...

I don't even know the scores for this game or how they're worked out. But it's fun giving my predictions anyway:

2. Button
3. Vettel
4. Hamilton
5. Massa
6. Webber
7. Trulli
8. Alonso

I guess that Kers will be completly redundant around Monaco unless your in the lead. Will Mclaren take theirs off to reduce a bit of weight and help balance?

Having seen the lead cars in Spain without KERS and watched Massa suffer the ignomy of running lean to actually finish in a heavier, thirstier car and be defencelss against attackers, I assume KERS needs a complete re-think

Too early for detail predictions yet but I wouldn't be surprised to see some of the cars which are short of downforce - Mclaren especially - running rather better on a circuit where mechanical grip comes to the fore and the driver can make a big difference.
Of all the venues this one is closest to my heart and I'm looking forward to qualy almost as much as the race. Button will be mega; if the Toyota is on song, Trulli will fly; Alonso and Hamilton will graze every barrier in order to drag their recalcitrant steeds around faster than they care to go. Such is the grip of the slick tyres that we may see a return to the sub-74 second laptimes of 2004 and 2005.
Believe it or not, nobody has ever gone around Monaco faster than Kimi Raikkonen (1.13.644 in qualy, 2005). What chance of a repeat?

You don't drive in, period. When we went in 2004 we trained it every day, and every day the gridlock stretched progressively further from the entrance to the Principality.
Anyone going this year?

Its funny as I usually go to monaco a week before the GP to do the classic and you end up late at night getting the Neds from Nice turning up in their 500bhp Subarus trying to do a lap late at night before the Monaco Gendarmes get hold of them. They have the added danger of all the hookers in casino aquare to deal with though, a distraction that I think should be added to the race.

As hard as ever to speculate from practice, but Mclaren are clearly much better here, as expected. Brawn, Ferrari and Red Bull all look good; Toyota nowhere but probably sandbagging. Rosberg was already half a second inside last year's pole time this afternoon, so they should be well into the 1.14s in Q2. Can't wait.

As an aside yesterday I pressed the red button while watching BBC News 24 and selecting the link to Sport the main header was Monaco GP. I selected that and it came up with highlights of a few F1 races from times of yore.
They were only on for about 10 minutes or so each but the races were 1961, 1981, 1982, 1992 and 1996.
I think the channel the link takes you to is 301 or 302 on freeview.

This weekend, sadly, it's not to be. The Toyota simply isn't working around the streets.

Based on the races so far the benefit of KERS is questionable. However, Massa's problem in Barcelona is a bit of a red herring. In interviews at Monaco Massa has said that the problem in Spain was eventually traced to an error with the on board telemetry. At the end of the race there was plenty of fuel left in the tank. He didn't run out of fuel on the slow down lap but stopped because he was instructed to do so by the team (there is a requirement for a minimum amount of fuel to be left in the car at the end of the race for the purpose of sampling it).

Monaco masterclass - Raikkonen's astonishingly undramatic 2005 pole lap: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFHy_ieU3Pc&feature=related
That stands as the fastest lap ever on the current configuration, but both Trulli's in 2004 (1.13.985 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CR2Rf9F40DA&feature=related) and Alonso's in 2006 (1.13.962) were set with race fuel.
For me these are some of the finest demonstrations of supreme skill in the modern era.

The Toyotas and BMWs had shockers, and Force India were the ones to benefit. But Kimi on P2! Are Ferrari back?
Lewis, well, what a shame.

I put too much faith in Barrichello;
Massa set fastest lap, bit of a surprise as was Ferrari getting 3rd and 4th (although I correctly predicted Massa in 4th).
As to Hamilton, Kovalainen and Vettel...... oh dear. Roll on the next race :-(

Wasn't a classic that one but not a bad race. I found Buttons error of dumping his car in Parc Ferme and then having to run down the pit straight to join Rubens and Kimi highly amusing. How to be a classic British twit, but in a good way!

Made even better by the the fact that RB was in the right place but everyone else just followed JB.
Just shows how fit they are though for him to run that distance after a full race.

I slipped up there. Over a week without interweb access, and I only realised I'd forgotten yesterday at about 35,000ft somewhere above Montana. Jet Blue broadcast tv into the plane so I found out on ESPN.

Good stuff. After nine years in the sport, we're finally seeing just how gifted Button is - that was a truly inspired Q3 lap followed by a flawless lights-to-flag drive. Raikkonen looked right on it, which I enjoyed - he put in the fastest lap of the weekend (in Q2) and drove a strong race. I thought that Bourdais and Fisi both did well - strong weekend for Force India as a whole, in fact.
It's funny how Monaco rewards the old hands, doesn't it? As if it takes several attempts to get the hang of the place, so you see the talented youngsters clattering into the barriers while the experienced heads thread their way between them. Hamilton may have won last year, and it was a superb drive - but he was lucky to get away with kissing the barriers at Tabac.

I think you're right: I'm sure for young drivers it's all about bravery and adrenalin, but that can go horrible wrong, as we saw for Hamilton on Saturday, and Vettel the following day. Even Button had a nasty smash there a few years ago.

Button drove a brilliant race. What really impressed me, was his ability to conserve those dodgy super soft tyres when everybody else started to lose grip. That happened to Rubens, then Button just pulled away. I was glad to see Ferrari competitive again, clearly there updates have worked well.
I hope Red Bull can mount a serious challenge to Brawn in Turkry though, Horner sort of suggested that it would be possible in his post race comments.
