F1 Game - Hungary

Usual stuff - guess first eight finishers, pole winner and fastest lapper. And the bonus question is:

How many drivers will finish in the same position they started, minus retirements?

Deadline: Friday 24 July 2359 GMT
Big Blue

Nick: please clarify "minus retirements"

If Driver A starts 5th and the driver that started 4th retires and Driver A finishes 4th is that a point or does Driver A need to throw a place away to get a point?

Apologies for being thick, especially as I'm not going to win that point with anything other than a lucky guess
Dr. Hfuhruhurr

If a driver starts 5th, then finishes fourth becausea driver who qualified in the top four retires, then it counts.
Stuntman

Sounds complicated!  Would it be easier just to go with qualified 5th, finished 5th, O rulemaker?

Sure it would, but where's the fun in that?
Big Blue

This is Hungary, so started 5th, finished 5th with no retirements is a highly likely result!

Do retirements count or do drivers have to finish/be classified in the race?
I mean, someone qualifies 20th and is the first retirement, does that count?

Well, at least I got the winner right!
Before quali yesterday, Eddie Jordan predicted that Alonso would be on pole;
before the race today, when asked who he thought would win, he said Lewis by a long way.
How did he know ???  Luck of the Irish ?
BeN

Not to take anything away from Lewis, but basically Alonso (or rather Renault) threw it away, and Red Bull threw it away too (with Webber's botched pitstop. Not sure what happened with Vettel there).

It's almost like they didn't want to win it.
Chris M Wants a V-10

Alonso was so light on fuel that even he conceded before the race that he was unlikely to even be on the podium.  Red Bull just had a bad race for various reasons; in the post race press conference, Webber sounded somewhat disappointed to have only finished third.
Brawn need to pull their fingers out and find out why their car has almost stopped working

He also said Hamilton was right when he urged his team not to rush through the updates and that Massa definitely suffered brake failure which is why he crashed.

He spouts such a volume of shite that he will occasionly get something right. He also has some really good informants it seems (he knew about Massa's injury before anyone else yesterday) so probably knew Renault had a about 5 litres of fuel in.
Gooner

Not bad that, I got Hamilton, Webber and Rosberg spot on with Button only one place out. Is that my best performance of the season so far?
Big TC

Well, with Ferrari and McLaren's new-found competitiveness, it looks like they'll take points off Red Bull, thus ensuring that Button wins the title, despite now being in a less-than-competitve car.

Anyone agree?
TimR

Isn't there a chance that, given current form, Button/Brawn could throw the win away and McLaren could win it or are they too far back?

Webbers only 18points behind Button so requires only a couple of 6th or 7th places from Button and hes under serious pressure. Red Bull probably have the fastest car out there still so Brawn need to do something PDQ to make sure they don't throw the drivers title away.

I don't know... I can't see it being anyone but Button, Webber, or Vettel. It is going to hurt Red Bull that they have two good drivers, but they have the performance at least. They'll have to hope McLaren went so well due to the nature of the track and have not found genuine high-speed aero balance (Lewis was going to win that, from the first corner, regardless of Alonso's failure - indeed he'd leapfrogged the Spaniard before the failure). If McLaren are better on all circuits, and Ferrari keep getting stronger, then Red Bull will find it harder to find the points they need.

I guess it mainly comes down to whether Brawn, with hardly any sponsors, can keep up development and find enough pace to get Button a decent haul of points. If he can finish even regularly mid-points he ought to be OK, but the last few races will worry him...

I hope Webber wins, personally... But I can see Lewis, Kimi and Alonso potentially winning races and this plus their hunger and ability to do so will not help Red Bull at all! Those three drivers are all a cut above the Red Bull/Brawn crew, as are the teams, this may become apparent when they start mixing it...

Not really. After Hamilton had overtaken Webber, he opened up a four second gap before getting in Alonso's Renault dirty air, then after Alonso pitted he gad a gap of over seven seconds to Webber before Webber came in - despite only carrying a lap less of fuel than Webber.

That was genuine speed and RBR had no answer, dodgy stops or not. Undoubtedly the race would have been closer between Hamilton and Webber if it wasn't for RBR's dodgy stop, but I think Hamilton had an answer for anybody yesterday.

Pole: Alonso
Lap: Webber
Bonus: 3. Three drivers retired - Alonso (qualified 1st), Vettel (2nd) and Sutil (17th). Therefore to count for the bonus, every driver who qualified between 3rd and 16th would have to gain two places, and every driver who qualified between 18th and 19th would have to gain three. So the eligible drivers were Barrichello (started 12th, finished 10th), Piquet (14th, 12th) and Fisichella (16th, 14th).

1 Hamilton
2 Raikkonen
3 Webber
4 Rosberg

To be fair, that was how it looked in the first few moments, I think DC said as much.

I've been reading today that even with track temps in the high 30s, Button's tyres were running at around 60C during the race - 20C below where they needed to be. And on a couple of occasions when the track crept above 40C, Button's laptimes would suddenly drop. Clearly one of their recent updates has caused the problem - question is, can they fix it before Valencia?

As to the rest - hell of a turnup and good to see Hamilton hurling the Mclaren at apexes again, instead of tiptoeing around. Fine effort from Raikkonen, too, on a mighty difficult day for Ferrari.
BeN

3 miserable points. I suck.

Still too early, but we could have a Sav-macher on our hands. Three in a row?
Humphrey The Pug

Nil points for me!!
Rodge

That's my second worst result, ever.
From leading after the first race, I've suddenly gone all Button.

His debut was totally overshadowed by Massa's accident, but respect to young Jaime Alguersuari. He'd never been around a corner in an F1 car before Friday morning, and took a verbal battering from some of the press and drivers. Yet he got his head down and did a very respectable job, keeping the car on the road all weekend - unlike his team mate - and bringing it home. Solid race pace, too.
