I had a dream last night that a spurious safety car was sent out during the GP which put Rosberg right back in contention for the win. I imagine that would keep the conspiracy theorists busy over the summer! Especially after where Sutil spun last weekend.

If you read this in time, I suggest you edit your response. I don't think any team is running 4 cars this year......

Blimey, that was a great race. Regarding the Mercedes brouhaha, you wonder why they didn't stop Hamilton once more, given Rosberg's (and Ricciardo's) amazing late pace on fresh tyres.
Sav

I think they anticipated the harder compound wearing less than the option tyre that Alonso was on, and Alonso being forced to pit.  At that point perhaps Alonso was the main target for Hamilton. They probably pitted Rosberg after he failed to pass Lewis with the same thinking, Mercedes must have thought that the soft tyre wouldn’t make it until the end. It was quite telling how Rosberg could stay with Hamilton on the softer compound that was an older set than Hamilton's harder set.

The much cooler air and track temperatures in particular meant the harder tyre just didn’t have the advantage like in Friday practice. In Friday practice the softer compound was giving up after half a lap on some cars; on Sunday it comfortably did more than 30 laps.

IMO, what really slowed up Alonso and Hamilton was when the former got crossed up at the chicane. It slowed them both through the esses after that, and that allowed Ricciardo to close up to an even greater extent.

It was a tremendous Grand Prix to watch, it is fair to say that a fair few races this year have been outstanding to watch.

These 2014 cars are going to be colossal down the Kemmel Straight. They were almost hitting 215 mph in Germany, and now the next circuit has one of the longest full throttle sections, if not the longest full throttle section in F1 with the run from La Source to Le Combes.
Dr. Hfuhruhurr

Perhaps they didn't realise how much of an advantage a new set of options would give - Ricciardo and Rosberg were on another planet in the last 10 laps or so. I think if they'd swapped Hamilton before Rosberg, he would have won, especially when it was clear he wasn't going to get past Alonso on worn primes.
Sav

Yep, the difference between Alonso/Hamilton and Ricciardo/Rosberg towards the end was almost F1 v GP2 pace difference at some points!

In fairness to the teams it was quite unknown as to how both compounds would react on a green, much cooler race track compared to when the heavy fuel running was done in soaring heat. I guess Lewis’ engineers elected for a cautious approach at that point, and given how severely the softer tyre dropped off during high-fuel, race simulations – it was understandable.

Alonso did an outstanding job to keep those softer tyres alive for that long, they were older than Hamilton's harder tyres - it was mega impressive.

Rosberg indeed might have won if he managed to get past Hamilton quickly. Although if Rosberg had become stuck behind Ricciardo by Mercedes calling in him too late, I’m not so sure that Rosberg could have passed Ricciardo. As Hamilton showed against Vettel, the Red Bull was  fast enough in the twisty middle sector and the straights weren’t long enough for the extra speed of the Mercedes to pass, or at least quickly pass the Red Bull. Friday running saw little difference between both cars on high fuel runs.

Are the 2014 cars going to be able to go through Eau Rouge on full throttle?

As an unashamed tifosi I will say that Alonso is the greatest Ferrari driver of all time, certainly of the "modern" era (1970s on)

Sure Michael won a shit load of titles but in a car way ahead of the rest and on tyres developed around the car; Niki won a title in '77 with his face burned off from the year before and is a legend; Villeneuve (G) I feel was an exhibitionist twat; Prost was mr conservative, Mansell (Il Leone) drove with his heart on the outside and is close to Alonso in terms of what you want a Ferrari driver to be and most of the others were good but not Ferrari "greats" (including Kimi, who has a title).

I'll also add that Alonso is far and away the best driver out there this year, last year and the year before that.

Can't argue with any of that.
