I thought that was a cracking race. We missed the start because someone, mentioning no names, (Mrs Skyhook) set the Skybox to record the parade lap pre-show but forgot the race was seperate, but the last half was very entertaining.

Cars seem to be able to run a lot closer this season without the complaints of 'dirty air' stopping them getting into an overtaking position. A result of the reduced aero?

Great to see Mercedes letting their drivers go for it against each other right to the chequered flag; Nico remaining polite but obviously peed-off at coming second bodes well for future races.

Ricciardo has suprised me too - good to hear him having the confidence to tell the team to get the star driver Vettel out his way. Chuckled at the calm "What was that?" on the radio after Maldonardo did a Maldonardo too.
Sav

For me it was a brilliant Grand Prix to watch. I think reduced downforce is one aspect, but also the cars just look looser and they appear to move about more. I don't remember seeing Vettel struggle so much over a weekend, he got too greedy on the power in turn 3 during practice, and ended up in the gravel. That turn last year seemed like a a non-event for him last year with the extra traction and downforce.

Although they don't sound particularly inspiring, the cars are great to watch this year.

Fantastic race today, those Mercedes are unstoppable and when released after the safety car were pulling away at almost 2.5 seconds per lap.

Hamilton really showed today that he is one of the best out there at the moment by managing to keep back a faster Rosberg, he showed real skill by the placement of his car and his defending.

Good to see Finger Boy being beaten and good to see Red Bull allowing it to happen; Vettel likes a perfectly planted car and this year with the new regulations the cars are far more skittish, much like early 2012 (?) when the blown diffusers were turned down and Webber was beating him, then they were turned back up again and Vettel got ahead again.

As much as the is a lot of moaning and groaning about the new regulations this year, I'm really enjoying it so far.
Martin

Yes, it was a great race yesterday, plenty of action and racing until the end.
DetmoldDick

Best race in a long time.
Clunes

Hamilton really showed his skill in those past 10 laps - I honestly thought he had no chance to keep Rosberg behind given the tyre difference - hugely impressive racing.
JohnC

It was a great race but given the way Rosberg was all over the back of Hamilton after the safety car, it might be a bit fairer on the leader if DRS was deactivated for 3 laps after a restart. Effectively the safety car removes all the hard work and strategy of the leader and hands an advantage to the 2nd placed driver through DRS.

I think that race might prove to be a pivotal point in the season with Hamilton firmly slapping down Rosberg - will he or will he not be able to respond?

DRS is already deactivated for the first two laps after a restart.
Frank Bullitt

Great race, but they sound so shit (that might have been mentioned before...)
JohnC

It didn't seem like 2 laps Sav although Rosberg's better tyre no doubt made a difference.
Nice Guy Eddie

Amazing race and when the safety car came out I thought that was Hamiltons race done. How he kept Rosberg behind.

Brilliant battles throughout the field and the standard of driving from all involved (apart from Maldonado and Bianchi) was great to see.
Twelfth Monkey

Looks like I'm the only one who wasn't riveted!

What was the race missing?

TBH its whilst watching races like that yesterday it becomes clear what a total Hamilton fanboy I am.

good question!

A barrel roll rather than a flip?

World champion not just humiliated by his team mate but actually drives slowly past his own pits and throws a dummy out of his car?

All lights fail for 1 minute and when they come back on all the cars are in exactly the same position but driving backwards?
Martin

Nothing and same here.  The thought of him being 'robbed' of a victory and then watching him defend brilliantly had be off my seat!
Sav

John, it might have appeared that way because Rosbergís faster soft tyre meant he could stay right with Hamilton after the restart, even without DRS.

Hamiltonís and Rosbergís pace on the two tyres was interesting. Hamilton undoubtedly got an undercut on Rosberg at the first pitstop. However, he steadily increased the lead on a fairly long stint when Rosbergís should have cut the gap on the more durable tyre Ė but he didnít. I think that was the Mercedes plan; Hamilton to get the undercut on the option, but for Rosberg to claw back the gap with the prime as the stint progressed.

Roles were reversed after the Safety Car, but Rosberg didnít appear to have the pace that Hamilton had on a fresh set of softs. Rosberg also seemed to wear his soft tyres out at a faster rate as well. Although it was widely said that Rosberg was faster, Hamiltonís pace after the first pitstop strongly contributed to his win imo.

Hamilton was remarking that he didn;t have the pace that he expected to have, based on Malaysia, during the entire race at Bahrain.
Makes you wonder that if he had the pace he was expecting, by how much would he have won again?
I really hope that Hamilton has got his mojo back this year; the signs are encouraging so far and I think he has a very good chance of being World Champion again in 2014
BeN

Agree with all that it was a great race. In fact it was one of the few that made me not want to fall asleep halfway (which says something given that the night time start meant a midnight broadcast where I am).
Eff One

Best race for some time and all credit to Merc for gritting their teeth and letting Hamilton and Rosberg go at it. Doubly satisfying to see egg on the faces of 'Taxicab' Montezemolo and the Poison Dwarf.

I was thoroughly sick of all the whining about F1 being in 'crisis' after two less than stellar - but certainly not terrible - races. A lot of fans - who should know better - don't seem to realise how lucky we are, or what an incredible job the teams have done to get on top of the biggest technical changes in a generation.

There was talk - from the teams themselves - of just a few cars making the flag in Melbourne, of huge gaps in performance turning the early races into demonstration drives.

Instead we've got the entire field covered by roughly 4 seconds - a second of which is Mercedes alone - and after 15 cars made the finish in Melbourne, in Bahrain there were only three retirements down to reliability. There has been very little evidence of economy running - certainly the Merc-powered cars are flat out.

It is much better than I was expecting.
