Entering these in a photo comp - opinions please?

I've just joined a local photo club to try and improve my photography skills after completing a short college course. Their competition for this month (entries for which have to be in on Tuesday!) has the theme 'Red' - I'm proposing to enter these:

What do you think?
..

I think that the first one might look better if cropped to portrait, summot like this...

I really like the car shot and for me it's the best of the three.

Number two doesn't grab me, I'd be looking for something to replace it with.
Humphrey The Pug

I like number three too.
..

I think I'd crop number two too...

or...

Woody

How's this for a crop?

..

I like it better than the original. Do you?

Maybe you could cop that fruit shot into a square? This one isn't quite a square but I'm sure you could get it square...

This might be interesting as you'd then have a landscape orientation shot, a portrait orientation and a square.

Wot-ya-think?
Woody

Actually, yes! Just got to get more photo paper now as I've run out...
PhilD

Very good, but aren't the first two orange?!
Woody

Orangey-red I thought...

How about this one instead of the tomatoes? I can enter up to 3.

PhilD

^^ fab!
..

Nice, I personally would boost the contrast and sharpen it a little, for Red impact...

Woody

Thanks guys, done. I won't bother posting the revised one as it looks much the same as Woofle's edit. Looks like I'll need a riper tomato next time though

Orange colour aoart, I think the flower lacks depth of focus. The front petals are sharp but the back ones are not. To me, that makes me feel the subject is is out of focus, as a whole, because one only really sees the out-of-focus back petals against the background.
..

Shallow depth of field is a creative effect.

I always preferred cycle wings on a Caterham.

(Nice pics BTW!)
Stuntman

Nice shots - and I'm impressed by Alan's cropping skills and eye for composition.
Big TC

I like the one with the dog, Dave. With Alan's suggestions, re the colour contrast suggestions.

Me too! But I couldn't get a cycle fender one at the time for anywhere near my budget!

I'm constantly amazed by the photographic skills on this forum, would shame alot of photography forums I expect!

Woody, been playing with your photo, for my own amusement you understand! Got an App on iphone called colour splash which allows you to only have certain bits in colour. Thought it worked well with your car pic, though itís lost a lot of picture quality as Iíve had to save in onto the phone and then e-mail it back to myself.

Woody

Hmm I think I like that. To my eye it loses some of the depth and detail in the engine bay, but the greyed out background looks loads better.
PhilD

Its a good little App. You could just have the body work in colour or just the car. Bit rough n ready these, need a bit more time and love!

I like greyed out backgrounds, can make pics look a little 3-D.

PhilD

Did the flower as well but don't like it as much.
