E91 330i M-Sport Touring

Die Schreibmaschine threw a red light at me (see not breakdown thread) so I was going to use W2.0's E46 until it's mended. Then the B-I-L says I might as well use his as it just sits there all day. So I did.

As I encouraged him to buy it it was nice to get to use it properly on a mixed journey. It's certainly a move up on the E46 inside but that's probably because it's specced to the moon. Nothing surprising as it's just another 3-er but one thing DID shock me.

This is the 258bhp version, not the 272bhp one (which is generally more efficient / frugal) which means it's over 20bhp down on the Schreibmaschine which has a much older engine altogether. The Alpina did 16.6mpg on the return journey on each day I used it this week. The 330i did 16.4mpg. I'm not concerned about mpg but I was just amazed my car was marginally more efficient than a smaller, newer one.

I thought you didn't care about fuel prices? What was it like to drive    ?

Presumably in town its hard to say... A nice stand-in anyway!

As I said in the end of my post, I'm not concerned about it, just surprised.

It's a nice enough place to spend time and being über well specced helped a lot. I'm using it more next week.

I would suspect that the Alpina needs less of a prod to get it going than the 330 so around town, the V8 has an advantage.  I would expect the 330 to be more economical on a run once up to speed.

Die Schreibmaschine is an inline 6, based on the E36 M3 block, not the V8.

I always though it was a V8. I am now very disappointed.
