Dinner - Adrian Newey

Now hear this, which I am posting here as I assume you frequent this place due to a love of car racing.

As you may or may not know I belong to a particular club in St James and each year there is a motoring dinner whereby the speaker is some bod from the world of F1. This year it is someone called Adrian Newey.

Due to the nature of the F1 world the dinner was announced at short notice but being a motoring sub-group person I managed to acquire some tickets (they were sold out in a day). I therefore have some places for a black tie dinner on Thursday 13th February in Pall Mall. This is the room the dinner is held in:

Tickets are £92 and include a champagne reception, 4 course meal with wine and a digestif. †Please PM me if you are interested (and asap before I throw some of my tickets back in the hat)

Bugger. Would have loved to attend that but I'm taking some Swedes to see the turnips play Spurs at St.James' Park the night before and then down to 'Boro.

Wow! A great opportunity and bloody good value.

I would love to be there but I'll be in New York.

Bummer, I'll be spending the night in Nottingham on business on the 13th. What a fantastic opportunity though,  hope you enjoy it.

Similarly unavailable and lacking the spare funds but what a great opportunity and thank you for offering it here.

Never mind, Ben. If I'm ever in Singapore I'll meet you in The Tanglin Club on Stevens Road. We have a reciprocal agreement with them.

That's a deal.

Well a nice time was had by all. Newey was sort of entertaining but I reckon Ben Cussons (the Chairman of the Motoring Committee) was a huge help. Some things:

He went to Repton and was a year above some tall bloke that runs a car show on BBC2. He claimed to know nothing of him as he was a Stig (what Repton new boys are called) and Newey had no need to know of him.

Newey was very gracious in saying his father (a veterinary surgeon) was far and away his greatest inspiration as he was a hobby mechanic and gave his son a free rein in the family workshop.

His lady was very nice to chat with and I told her that when he had a year off he had to take her to the IoM TT (he's a big bike fan so I warmed to him even though he is the enemy of the tifosi). He got his first job in motorsport when he turned up forthe interview onhis bike with full leathers on, the team principle asked if he could take it out for a ride; returned and simply said "when do you start?"

Funny bike story: when he was at Williams some motorcycle dealer gave 2 bikes to the team for the drivers to do a couple of laps of the GP circuit on. Frank said "no way; too much of a risk" so Patrick Head and Adrian would do the laps in full Williams colours. Adrian showboated with a wheelie, got it badly wrong and lunged in to the Camel sponsor paddock area where a sponsor lunch was being served. When he arrived back in the pits with bits of smoked salmon and cream cheese covering the rips in his shirt Frank said "have you any idea how much those team suits cost?" and docked it from his pay.

On a race related note they had Ivan Capelli's 1990 French GP 2nd place car in the rotunda. I remember watching that race like it was yesterday, where the team ran the whole race with no tyre stop and narrowly missed a win as Prost caught up on fresh tyres with a lap or so to go.

Great night and to be fair to Newey he made it down to the Long Bar after the dinner as opposed to just pissing off after the dinner. Mind you he's been given enough honours and trophies by the RAC to warrant a piss up. Grainy iPhone picture to close.

I presume he remained tight lipped about current overheating problems and Renault unreliability. At this rate they are going to have to run two great big air vents in to the engine bay just to do a dozen laps.

I wonder if 2014 will result in the biggest fall in performance by any Championship winning team.

Glad you enjoyed the night though in such magnificent surroundings.

Darn, I forgot about that. My Sky presn thingy was cancelled a couple of days before due to the Tube strike so I could have made it after all.

Looks like a great evening
