Death of the wing mirror

Japan passed legislation allowing cameras and screens to replace wing mirrors last month, with the EU set to follow soon:

It'll be a bit of a shame - there's nowt like driving past a long line of stationary cars, battering their wing mirrors with yours as you pull up to a set of lights.

I think it will be a time before the technology gets the positioning and clarity right. My reversing camera is great when it's clean and dry but not exactly clear when it's dirty and wet.

My wing mirrors have a liberal coating of glass sealant and stay clean and clear all the time regardless of the weather. I know which I prefer on a wet motorway.

It will take a while to get used to. I drove the VW XL1 which had cameras instead of mirrors and it felt quite weird.

Did you?

Tell us more about that, it's the Ducati thing, right?
Tim

I'll be happy - driving something like the Fiat Coupe or Nissan you often find that the wing mirrors of the car in front block your view for overtaking so you have to edge out even more

Also the mirrors on the Nissan are HUGE and block your view from inside the car.

Unfortunately not. Just the 'normal' one. This was a couple of years ago.

I find I have a bit of a perceptual issue with cameras/screens - my reversing camera image is fine, but my brain would rather I turned around!

The concept of cameras instead of mirrors is nothing new - my dad appeared on Tomorrow's World back in about 1992 demonstrating a prototype!

So what's holding it back? I'm presuming the legislators aren't allowing it? The technology clearly works. Or is it public perception?

Apologies if I've asked you this before. Do you write in English or are we reading a translation?

Looks like Baxter may have stopped presenting TW before 1992, his dad may be Maggie Philbin......
