Dacia Duster

Not driven exactly, but I spent a couple of hours in the passenger seat of a friend's one at the weekend. I was surprised at how much I didn't dislike it really. There were a few things that grated, like the unpainted parking sensors on the rear bumper and some of the interior plastics (to be expected), but over all it wasn't too bad. I obviously can't comment on the performance, not having driven it, but the ride wasn't great and the car wobbled from side to side over speedbumps and the like along with considerable body roll. The diesel engine wasn't too gruff and was fairly well insulated from the cabin. This seems at odds to most reviews I've read, so maybe the UK got extra NVH tuning?

Funny you should say that as almost everyone who test drives it says exactly the same.

For what it is and what it costs it's a bloody good car.

Going to have a look at one of these with my sister-in-law when she returns from Morocco. Her Freelander is increasingly expensive to run and maintain and these seem like an ideal low-cost alternative.

I think there is a definite appeal to the Duster and I rather like the looks.  The top spec models probably go a bit against the ethos of the concept, so "moderately basic" is perhaps the best point in the range.

Ha! BMW didn't see fit to paint the rear parking sensors on my car, either apparently figuring that black plastic on a black car wouldn't show. Having checked out a black F31 3-series Touring parked near my house, that also had unpainted sensors...

Really? That's going to look interesting in a few years when the unpainted black has faded a bit!
