Cracking deals

Hot on the heels on the decent discounts I swung on my own car and my mother's soon-to-arrive Countryman, I had a friend of my sister's on the phone after some car-buying advice.

After discussing her requirements, I packed her off to the local VW dealership here in London to look at new Golfs armed with some broker quotes since VW is doing some cracking deals on them. Anyhoo...she gets back in touch to say thanks, she decided she preferred the Polo to the Golf and moreover, on a new 5dr 1.4 Polo Match Edition (where do they get these names from...) with metallic paint retailing at £15.5k, they were prepared to knock £4k off. That's near as dammit 26%. Meaning that with £1k deposit, it was looking like under £170/month over 3 years even though VW's APR is a little shonky.

Now that's good value.

That's about £7.1k, so what is the MGFV (balance to pay to buy after 3 years) ?  It's good value if you don't mind a bland eurobox

About £6.3k. She's a Polo kind of girl, if you get my drift.

As I recently posted about a new SEAT Ibiza, one can only assume that there is a new Polo imminent. Stands to reason that the current one would be discounted...

Sounds similar to my Mum's deal on the last runout 2 yrs or so ago. I think she got £3K off, but had to take the finance to get it which we cleared after 18 months.

£170 a month sounds a good deal, though I have to remind myself it's a lot more than the E500 cost me and I know which I'd prefer.

I think the average customer is not that bothered about model cycles if it means saving a chunk of change. My mother was well aware that there was a new Countryman due. Apart from anything else, she wasn't sure she liked the styling of the new one, and she also ventured the view that (a) she likes run-out models as they should've ironed out all the glitches by then and the model's the best it will ever be; and (b) at her age, the less new-fangled and confusing tech the better...

Well same here. But neither of us is a 30-something London girl-about-town.

A riff on the old VW ad where the middle-aged chap in a suit holds up a sign saying "At weekends my name is Mandy"....?

I'm not saying it's a bad price, merely that these deals sound tempting to the miser in me, then the petrolhead comes to the fore.

Much as I'm liking the X5, it's not the E500 I'm concluding.......

That's nasty (not the car, the temptation of putting the ad there   ).
