Classic & Sportscar July

What a cracking edition.

GT shoot-out between DB7, 3200GT, 456GT and 850CSi, feature on 1990's hot hatches, comparison between 993 vs 996, article on the Camargue....

Seriously....I think they got hold of my Autotrader browsing history...

So, what do they think you should buy?

Easy - have one of each!

They simply say, "Ask the Forum."

The 456 is long out of budget.
The DB7 is not going to be minty enough for me in my price bracket.
I absolutely adore the 850CSi and haven't yet written it off, but part of me does wonder if they are cars better admired from a safe distance.
I'd rather have a 4200GT than a 3200GT. More driveable by all accounts and better developed.
I am very taken with the idea of a 996. Probably not a 4S as I prefer the delicacy of the standard shape and a Targa would be ideal.

Sounds like you need to start organising a few test drives so you can work out which car suits you best. I think the pro's and con's of each car have been well documented so it's really a case of which is your favourite that you can see yourself driving each day.

How about this then?

Or for a bit more:

I have already spotted that 996 Targa. I just haven't had time to go and see it. It's about an hour away.

The 997 is over budget.

You're worse than an accountant! Budgets are meant to be broken

The 997 probably has money to lose. A 996 is less likely to.
Alf McQueef

The 996 is a good shout. I saw a lovely one with 150k miles on it for 12k about 8 years ago. It was in very nice nick, and dark blue paint with black leather, so less offensive than some. Are you looking at 996.2 or 996.1? I'm not sure what % of the latter have engine issues, I expect a small minority, but they were supposed to drive incredibly well...
Racing Teatray

Only the 996.2. More sorted, better-looking (to my eyes) and the 3.6 is supposed to be more reliable than the 3.4 from what I have read. Plus only the 996.2 was available as a Targa.

Has it got a Dakar mode?
