CitroŽn DS5 2.0HDi DStyle

Never actually driven one...until today

Time for a new car and I so want a DS5, so it's time to try one - local dealer had just the car in although it's a bit steep price-wise, but there's always a deal to be done.

First impressions are faultless - they aren't everyone's cup of tea but from every angle I think the DS5 looks fantastic, I've decided the CitroŽn DS5 is a better looking car than the DS DS5, there is something about the latter that is slightly gawky.  Anyway, Nera black with the 18" alloys it looks just-so.

What isn't commonly known is that despite the name, they aren't based on the 508/C5 platform but the smaller C4/DS4/308 (last generation) platform - the boot is a good size and shape, no issues there at all. Inside the quality and materials is largely very good but some bits weren't so clever (door caps, which I'd never noticed before) but there is a problem.  A big one.

Styling the inside like a plane cockpit, anyone who has sat in an Avro Vulcan will recognise that for such a large beast, the driving position is surprisingly small and so it is with the DS5 - the centre console is vast and in many respect very well laid out and elegant but it simply takes up too much space - the driving position is quite high too and it felt to me like the driving position was only just big enough for me - imagine my shock to discover that Mrs FB at 5'3" barely fitted behind me, her feet not really having anywhere to go. It's smaller inside than the DS4, no question.

It drove very well indeed, it didn't really feel like the DS4 at all, the steering is unsurprisingly light but I quite like that so long as I'm confident where the front wheels are, and the gearbox and clutch both felt very light but positive, the ride on 18" wheels was superb although the road noise appeared higher to me than the DS4 (which also rides on 18's), the engine very smooth and punchy with more than enough punch for the real world - gearing is ultra-tall in 6th, pulling about 40mph/1000rpm. I didn't get the chance to push the handling, but that doesn't bother me.

I could happily punt it around and it suddenly dawned on me, as I ducked backwards and forwards around the A-pillar that there's much about it that was A2-like.

So much to like; so, so much to like and as I got out and looked back I had that 'buy me, you fucker' look from it - but I can't, it's too small inside, too much of a compromise. I want to cry.

Currently debating a CitroŽn DS4 2.0HDi 160 DSport or a facelifted DS DS4 2.0HDi Blue 150 Prestige.

Why the oil-burner?

The Citroen version of all DS cars look better to me. The DS business looks grafted on and they look nondescript yet messy.
Disappointing when you meet your heroes and they're not all you hoped for. Had a similar experience in a dealership earlier today...

I did not know there were Citroen and DS versions. What on earth for?

They recently rebranded all the DS as just DS for differentiation.

DS was a sub-brand of CitroŽn but the decision was made a couple of years ago to make DS a sub-brand of PSA (i.e. CitroŽn, Peugeot and DS all sitting alongside each other), in simple terms the aim is to do a 'French Lexus' over a generation; it just makes the changeover slightly confusing as each model has been restyled, hence me referencing CitroŽn DS5 and DS DS5 (which is, of course, simply the 'DS5') - the first ground-up DS is the next DS3 although as is always the case with the use of as much common tech as possible it's heavily related to the 208 and next C3.

Whether you buy into the brand or not PSA have caused themselves some issues with this regarding their history with DS, a few uncomfortable tweets and Facebook posts have got the CitroŽn historians into a flurry of anger when posts are showing the history of CitroŽn with no DS to be seen, when challenged the spotty yoof at CitroŽn says 'it's not a CitroŽn, it's a DS' which to be fair to the bearded-lot, is complete and utter crap - for the future it doesn't bother me one way or another on the branding side but PSA are rewriting history to suit the needs of the rebrand, which has gone down like a fart in a lift.

That's really disappointing Chris, genuinely sorry to hear it as it sounds so close to being the car you hoped for.

Even more reason to get a proper DS!

Shame it's not the interior shape you want. I love these but reading your notes it seems I'm best treating that love like my admiration for Liz Hurley: fine as an onlooker but terrible in person.

So the DS5 is actually smaller inside than the DS4? Will the next DS5 be bigger then as all cars inevitably seem to be?

It does seem nonsensical that the DS5 was based on the C4 platform as it does make it quite restrictive given that buyers, such as yourself FB, are expecting it to be large and spacious family car similar in size to a Mondeo. This coupled with pricing that is also similar to the Mondeo and Passat probably goes some way to explaining the disappointing sales figures.

It is definitely smaller, incredibly - the chunkier seats don't really help. †The next DS5 will share the same architecture as 308, C4 Picasso (and everything else C4 sized and bigger) which is called EMP2 but it works in the same way as VAG platforms, it's heavily scalable for wheelbase and track (the C4 Picasso has a much wider track than the 308, for example despite the core architecture being shared).

Driving through France in the DS4 made me realise how much I like the car we already have, just a bigger diesel engine seemed like the right time to make the change.

I don't know why the DS5 doesn't share its platform with the 508, especially as the GT versions of the latter have double wishbone front and independent rear suspension.

How about a 508, then? In GT flavour.
