C4 Picasso 2.0HDi Blue Exclusive+

It's been nagging at me for a while that there is much to like about the C4 Picasso, especially so the current model.

Keen to make sure it was one in a decent spec with a decent engine we test drove this model at a local dealer - it is at the top of the range and although I would have liked to try a 1.6THP petrol, there are exactly none for sale in the uk at the moment. The 2.0HDi 'Blue' is a euro 6 dirty diesel with 150bhp and a wall full of torques to keep the vehicle moving along nicely.

First impressions are impressive, the car looked stunning in Teles Blue with the 18" Python wheels fitted, I do like the look of the car from every angle (I liked the look of the old one too), the salesman showed is how most of the tech worked, having a whole hill of FG to contend with, the most noticeable being Park Assist (more later) - this one has a glass panoramic roof which you get only a small sense of in the front but FB Junior will enjoy in the back. Acquaintance made, off we go for a spin, Mrs FB first which meant I could enjoy the passenger seat with 'relax' function (vibrating massage seat with an extendable footrest...very lovely) and FB Junior in the centre seat at the back.

From the passengers seat I was surprised with the amount of road noise (more later) but otherwise it was very serene, of course it rolled a little more than the DS4 but the ride felt wonderfully damped even on 18" wheels, almost cushioned - Mrs FB was happy with the go from the engine.   We swapped after 15 minutes and I had forgotten that in the current model I can't reach the pedals with the seat as far back as it goes (!) so got my position just so; unlike the old model with its 'bus' driving position the current car has a proper car-like driving position with excellent visibility as you'd expect. The gear lever is a little loose, not as tight as the DS4 although it wasn't an issue in-use. The engine pulls very well indeed, I had to go for a space to pull into traffic and it really took off; rolling into a roundabout in second a while later and there are limitations to how well it will pull at ultra low revs! Along with the gusto from under the bonnet the most noticeable thing was the steering - the old car was a bit PlayStation like but this had very good steering indeed, feelsome and very clear about what the front wheels are doing - yes it leans a little but not like a 2CV - I'd say it was a car you could enjoy driving, believe it or not; its be new chassis underneath this (shared with the 308) and you can tell. The ride continued to be perfect and the 2.0 engine really did pull well, joining the A1 on a slip road it very much went off like a scalded cat and the 2.0 unit is happy to rev too if required. The controls all feel beautifully natural and well-weighted; the central screen with a selection of touch-sensitive buttons to select the functions worked a treat, with useful features such as blind spot monitoring, auto dip mirrors, parking camera and so on. It drove well, very well.

Back at be dealership I gave the Park Assist a go - select the option in the menu, drive under 20km/h with the indicator on for the side you want to park at and be car measures the spaces, once you go past a space it tells you it is available; select reverse and the car controls the steering with you controlling the pedals and gears - very bloody clever, this was a perpendicular space and it got in there a treat.

The salesman left us whilst looking over the DS4 and working a price out - I could see why the road noise seemed a bit high, it only had one original Michelin fitted to the offside rear with the other tyres all being different unpronounceable brands - disappointing in one respect especially as they all seemed fairly new. It also has a mark on the boot I suspect as a result of somebody opening it and there being an obstacle - that would be sorted prior to sale.  It goes without saying the space and interior are spot on for us (too much? Who cares), it drives very well and comes across as a great product so it was down to numbers.  

They came back with a solid part ex (the Picasso is already well-priced) and at the moment CitroŽn are doing finance which gives you an extra £500 and two free services (worth about the same) but it is 10.9% APR and you have to take it over 48-60 months. We did some backwards and forwards work which made the deal look better - the salesman confirmed that we could pay the outstanding balance immediately and get the benefits of the deal. The dealer is going to get a price for a tow bar and 7 pin electrics for a bike rack (they use a local fitter and warranty it as they are cheaper than doing it in-house) tomorrow and then we will look at the whole deal. The 2.0HDi Blue can't have a spare wheel due to the Adblue tank filling the well (they have now changed the design so it is possible) so we would get a space saver and put it in a bag in the boot - I have the kit that we bought for the DS4 and would sell the tyre separately for that car.

Good work! When you mentioned these the other day I meant to say how much I like them, they make the 'MPV look' futuristic/spacey rather than minibus/family wagon.

There aren't many MPVs I like, but the C4 Picasso is one of them, it is much more interesting than something that looks like a van. †As I said recently, it makes more sense than a crossover if space and practicality are important.

Just had a look on Autotrader (as I know you will have done!) and there is a Grand Picasso in the colour/spec you like with the 1.6thp engine. †I assume I've seen the car you've driven too.

Have you written off buying new? †Nearly 30% discount closes the gap to used and means you could have the engine you want.

I think the Picasso and Grand Picasso are great looking cars. Shame about the shit tyres. That would have my mismatched tyre OCD alarm going off big time but I guess it's easily sorted. Hope it all works out.

A C4 Picasso already feels huge, not sure about a Grand Picasso! I have looked at new especially as there are some stellar discounts on them at the moment as it is about to have a minor trim-change; a 1.6THP Exclusive+ (auto only now) with metallic and a space saver is £19,300 which is a bit rich really, even if excellent value as it's basically another £4k

Glad I'm not getting flamed...

I looked into these when they were first out for my Ma but I think she would have had a bit of a wait so went with the DS4.

As MPVs go the entire Picasso range (including last gen) take som beating for looks and practicality.

Just looked and the Grand Picasso is 17cm / 6" longer, not a huge amount and it's still shorter than a 3 series estate.  I slightly prefer the looks of the shorter car due to the more rounded rear, but the extra practicality would probably swing it.

If it's the Espace meets Clio/Megane look I believe it is then it's going to be great. Interior looks very nice in this spec.

Same with the old one - the Grand was only 5" longer but the flat rear meant it looked much bigger. Might have a dig around a Grand

I like these, very contemporary looking around the nose. I do however have an entirely irrational and unexplainable dislike of tailgate lights mounted like that on the lid. I don't mind when they are split so some light is on the bodywork but the whole unit just annoys me.

all the Audis Qs are like that, the pay off is amazing access to the load area.

The Insignia wagon is another. i can't explain why but I just don't like it.

Expected end of the year so likely Q1 2017!!

Rear seats fold flat to boot level and slide back and forth, they are a 60/40 split.

Interestingly the boot floor is quite high; higher than current Scenic, I don't actually think that the new Scenic offers much more space or versatility than a Kadjar.

Although it is £4k more, I expect a better trade in offer and cheaper finance may be available on the new one? Might narrow the gap?

Yes and it will be worth more when you sell it as its a year newer.  That's barely into man maths territory.

I assume you've looked up the new car prices on broadspeed etc? I'd be trying to see what deal they could do to keep you in a Citroen.

I had assumed that cars with this arrangement had to have the second set of lights so that at night or when using hazards, they were still visible, even with the boot open. Maybe not, then.

It is because the brake and hazard lights have to be visible at all times. It's the same reason that on cars where the cluster overlaps onto the boot lid, the brake and indicator will always be on the outer edge of the cluster so that they remain visible when the boot is open, whereas the reverse and fog light will be on the inner section of the cluster.

The Insignia has it to allow for a wider boot aperture which is facilitated by having the boot hatch cover the full surface area of the rear of the car including having the entire cluster go with it when it opens. It does look odd but is useful if you're loading a fridge in the back!

So what does the C4 Picasso do?

It's got a strip of lights in the bumper that don't open with the boot. Its the same ruling that had Discovery's and Vitara's put additional lights in their bumpers as they became obscured by the open tailgate mounted spare wheels.

Discussing the styling of light clusters hidden behind boot lids is nerdy even for us!
It does seem a peculiar solution to a seemingly straightforward requirement to fit second light clusters behind the bootlids, hardly efficient in weight, cost nor complexity.

I parked up behind a flat bed transit earlier, it had a warning sticker on the rear stating 'lights may be obscured when tailgate is lowered'. Struck me as more efficient solution than fitting secondary light clusters!

Drove a latest Picasso .Generally impressed -the quality was good  seemed more consistent than most French cars.
Its practicality appealed to me , when i was considering a new car , but i totally dismissed as i it i find it even more boring looking than most MPVs
