You beat me to it, just read it on Teletext.
Where does that leave Heidfeld and Kubica?
Will Toyota follow?

"Nevertheless, our ten years of Formula 1 experience have had a major impact on our development engineers. We have racing to thank for numerous technological innovations as well as the competitive spirit that drives us to develop mass-produced cars."
Such as?
Still it is a shame that another car manufacturer has pulled out!

A couple of teams will be champing at the bit to sign Kubica. Renault would be the obvious choice should Alonso leave.
Heidfeld I could see anchoring one of the new teams, replacing Nakajima at Williams or Barrichello at Brawn.

The engine of the M5/6 and the cam-cover of the 320si special edition were built alongside the F1 engines, apparently...

You have to remember that 3 teams are entering next year, so there shouldn't be a shortage of spaces.

That is assuming Renault don't pull out as well.

It's just what Max Mosley was worried about. I notice they waited to make the announcement until after he had confirmed his departure.

No surprise. Its first really bad year coinciding with recession. Either that or its target market is changing. I'd guess the average X6M buyer would prefer monster trucks to F1...

So where does that leave Peter Sauber and the team as a whole? I reckon one the "new" teams will suddenly look just like that BMW one......
Not sure manufacturers are the right way for F1 teams: rather better to have them doing engine development and supply whilst the teams, which are lighter footed and have a different objective to the huge corporate requirements of manufacturers, build the fancy bits that make the cars turn, stop and cut the air better. This year sees Brawn and Red Bull wasting the opposition so we may see a return to the '80s and 90s where teams were fighting for engine suppliers and building cars around them.

I think you make a good point. It must be embarrassing to see BMW branded F1 cars being spanked by Mercedes engined McLarens and Brawns. Mercedes only need supply the engines and don't have to deal with as many of the issues that come with a team. Now Mercedes are also supplying Force India, it'll be highly amusing if the Sauber team, or whoever they become, also take up Mercs F1 engine!

Cue Peter Sauber's re-purchase of the team in a last-minute deal, stick Merc engines in the back, and blow evryone away in the first 6 GPs next year.....

The V10 engine in the Ms appears to consume fuel at the same rate as an F1 engine too.
