BMW 318d SE auto

Like everyone else here, I've been tooling around in someone else's BMW, in this case Avis's. A bit disappointed initially that it was only (a) an 18d, and (b) SE poverty-spec, but ended up pleasantly surprised in both cases. For a start, it has nav, leather and dual climate, it rides beautifully on 225/50-17s on alloys that manage not to look undersized, and with the superb 8-speed auto in Sport mode, is quick enough - doesn't in fact feel significantly slower than either the 420i I had the other week, or the various 320ds I drove last year. And it does all the usual 3-series stuff - steering, handling - as you'd expect.

Have to say also that the 8-speeder is the first auto, AMT, DSG, CVT 'box that would seriously tempt me away from a manual. I've been using D mode for cruising and motorways, and S mode for B roads and downhill (where it holds lower gears and provides excellent engine braking.

It is a very good gearbox and works particularly well in BMWs, I wasn't quite so impressed with it in the XF (I assume it's the same?!).  I've never wanted an automatic before, but this has change my mind, I would have choosen it over the manual if I'd had a choice.

Apparently it works with the Professional Sat Nav now to make sure it's in the right gear for corners and junctions. I can't say I noticed, but that's a good thinig as it should work in a way that makes sense.

Can we see a former M3 owner ending up in a 318d slusher?  If so then the sun surely rises in the west?

Anything it possible.  There have been some very unexpected purchases on the forum, but I think that's stretching things a bit too far!

Can't see that happening, but as a hire car, it's not bad at all
