And has the stupidest moniker of any current car on sale?

Doesn't it weigh about 1600kg?
Matt

What happens when all the typical BMW drivers get bored and go to Audi, leaving very few appealing cars for the BMW fan to try and steer them out of the shit?

At least make a fixed-head coupe and for minimal development cost, they'll have another string to the Z4's bow.
TimR

I wonder why nobody senior within BMW has pointed out the shit naming policy?

I think the new Z4 is a good 250kg heavier than the old one and you can't blame it all on the new roof.
Dr. Hfuhruhurr

BMW have never really cracked sporty roadsters, so they've clearly decided to go the SLK (or even mini-SL) route with this one. Which obviously won't be a hit with the bods at Autocar, but might turn out to a good move sales-wise.

1580kg ( 1615kg as tested ) - apparently 185kg more than the old 3.0si.

Old 2.5 was weighed at 1335kg and the Z4 M Coupe at 1464kg

645ci is only 5kg more

I am struggling to think of any current bmw that is actually a better drivers car than the car it replaced. They have defniitely gone 'soft'.

X5? Though that says it all really ...
Gurney

Rather have an Alpina Z4, much nicer nomenclature too.
Dr. Hfuhruhurr

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see Alpina's take on this new Z4. Improved steering feel, conventional tyres, more power ...
DaveGibson

Elsewhere in Autocar (P 13), Alpina say that now the Z4 is made in Germany, not the US, it's not economically viable as an Alpina. It would cost £80-90K.
Guitar Zero

They've taken Z4 out of Spartanburg !!!

I thought that was one of the main drivers for locating a factory in America - build the sports car (Z3 and then Z4) and SUVs in their biggest market.

But the 3 and 5 series that they modify are also made in Germany.
Mark

My mate collected his new Z4 (although the 3.0) on Friday. He loves it. It certainly looks/sounds the business.
Matt

It does look very nice, but would look even better if it were available as a fixed-head coupe.

I find it funny that a few years ago BMW were trumpeting that their cars were going down in weight, but then they release an X6, the near-two-tonne 5GT and the replacements for both this and the 7-series weigh more.

All hot air these days.
Gurney

They are snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Stole a huge march on everyone else with Eco and now seem bent on producing lardy monstrosities.
Frank Bullitt

Seen a few and really noticed how much the rear looks like a 6-series.

I rather like the original Z4, has true 'want one' factor for me but the new one appears to be akin to the original SLK.

Popped into the BMW stealers this afternoon and boy is it spec sensitive. With little wheels and metal dash it looks pants but the one in the magazine today looked fab.

The one in the magazine was over £46k as specced.

No no no no,my friend had an original x5 and it was huge fun for a 4x4,handled well(for a 4x4),steering was good ..itwas huge fun,but he changed it for a LR,,he did have a full day with the new x5 and I had a go and basically you could swap the words for a comparison road test betweent he new x5 and old x5 with the words for a comparison road test for the new m3 vs last m3.The steering had become totally lifeless, the whole car feels much softer....no the new x5 may be a better all round car but it is less of a drivers vehicle than the previous one.
