Autocar 29th July

So, an XC60 travelling at less than 5mph will only suffer a 1 inch scar on it's bumper when it hits - and writes off an Audi A2.

Really?

And in that doyen of motoring factoids for the SAGA lout, Which magazine has just done it's annual motoring survey. In it they did a speed stability test where they drive at speed and do a braking and object avoidance manouvre. You know the sort of thing that journos say justifies thrashing a car round a track 'because you want to know how it handles in an emergency'.

First in Medium car category Alfa 159 3.2V6 Q4.

Alfa GT 1.9JTD Q2

Beating a BMW M3 and a Audi R8 into 2nd and 3rd place respectively

Don't worry Alfa naysayers, Which went on to confirm that having survived the collision in your Alfa you were still more likely to arrive home courtesy of the AA/RAC

I can readily believe that.A minibus reversed into the xc90 at a pretty fast pace (the driver was drunk) ,the volvo didn't have a dent or scratch (hard plastic bumper).I had the car inspected because I thought some damage must have been done to the chassis or something because it was a big minibus moving quite quickly...nothing,all perfect.
My friend had a prong n his range rover ,he had a small dent in the bumper, the ford fiesta he collided with was written off.
In fact I could make quite a long list of similar stuff I have seen or heard about. When it comes to crashing..bigger is better.
Gurney

They had a picture of what can only be termed as a light 'scuff' suffered by the Volvo, absolutely amazing that it could have totalled an A2.

Must be some physics going on, like you say Frankie biggest is obviously best.
Guitar Zero

It didn't " total " the A2 in the traditional sense (i.e, render it unrecognisable)

The A2 was 8 years old, so worth the square root of fuck all. The required repairs were relatively minor, but at main dealer or specialist labour rates, minor work becomes a £2k work out that writes off an 8 year old shopper hopper - Audi or otherwise
Gurney

I suppose an A2 has a pretty specialised construction being Ally and all so fair point, repair costs would be prohibitive.

indeed!

Presumably the Ferrari Scuderia was seventh or thereabouts?
Gurney

Surprisingly the Scud wasn't mentioned by the Which 'experts'.

Bit odd this swerve avoidance mullarkey. Our cousins in Europe seem to hold this in high esteem. In fact one Alfa engineer was supposed to have remarked that the new Spider was far superior in this test than a Boxster.

The fact that it was wobbling horribly whilst executing the manouvre was probably lost on him.
