Austria trip

Some pics from last week, note the progression of the weather.... Miserable being back after that!

Great pictures, almost as nice as Cornwall!

Looks lovely.

I went skiing to Austria when I was 15, I have amazing memories from the trip.

I've had a flick through and I can't see any cars. Am I on the right forum?

Lovely photos.

Love Austria. Been skiing many times and once in the summer where it is still spectacularly beautiful despite the lack of snow.

"Despite the lack of snow"?! The Alps are magnificent whatever the weather.

Great pics james .

Great pictures.  I love the Alps, had many fantastic summer holidays in Switzerland/Austria/Italy as a kid.   It looks particularly stunning when the sun is shining!

Which is what I meant by what I said so don't see what you are trying to say?!

"Despite" implies that the snow provides the beauty, or (at a stretch) it covers some hideousness. Anyway, we all agree, so all good!

Thanks for the comments guys, I'm hoping Lu is old enough (nearly 10) to be able to remember this trip. We have been tardy in taking her abroad for various reasons, and this being the modern world most of her friends seem to be in the Maldives or St Lucia or somewhere like that every half term or holiday. I loved travelling as a kid, but I don't recall much before about 10...

I'm still loving the "new" (last summer...) camera, an EOS6D. My old digital SLR - a 20D (available on Ebay for peanuts these days) took great shots but the screen was tiny for reviewing them, the low light performance was poor (the new one just takes shots indoors like its daylight, with no flash, even in a dark place like that castle above) and to get the shots how I wanted them I always converted the RAW images to JPEG in photoshop and had to edit them. The unedited JPEGs looked flat and dull, easily beaten by a compact camera.

With the new camera, with a tweak of the settings, I have the shots looking very much how I want them straight from the camera, which is how they all are above.  I'm using "medium" JPEG size only, which at 3648 pixels wide is larger than the full images from the 20D were, and more than enough for any web viewing or photos up to A4. I have the RAW files also stored in case I want a very big file for a big print, but I only tend to use RAW now for the shots where the camera did not expose it as I wanted, or where other serious editing is needed. That makes it much faster to review/post photos. I was reviewing them and downloading the best ones straight to the iPad via WiFi on holiday, then posting from that, no PC needed. That's progress.

Lovely pics, hope you're enjoying yourself!

Austria is one of those places that's never really been on my radar to go - looks great though.

Not taken FB Junior on a plane yet but his first time will be later this year.

Austria in May is basically heaven on earth - nice photos too.
woody90

Lovely pictures. Looks like a really nice place!
Boxer6

Some really stunning pictures there Alf. Very impressed with the OOC appearance too.

The really odd thing is, I'm at work and I can see them, even though they're PB-hosted. Really, most odd.

I know some of you know Germany/Austria quite well - perhaps you could shed some light on this. When we booked the accommodation most of the reviews were in Arabic, and when we were there the tourists that were not German seemed to all be arabs - not settled in Germany (I know there are a lot of Turks there) but proper, Arabic-speaking, burkha wearing, Arabs, often in nice hire cars and sometimes better at speaking English than German, I helped a few to find the reception where our chalets were. What's that about - why Austria - is it the contrast of the mountain scenery? I could understand it more later in the year when its unbearably hot in the Gulf, but it was pretty miserable the first few days we were there... I know London get plenty in the summer, but not every other person...

I used to love my visits to see my cousins and Uncle Josef in Austria - long summer evenings doing DIY in the cellar. He taught me everything I know about drywalling.

Great photos - almost jealous but I'll be there in the summer anyway We're going to Bad Ischl - quite an important historic town and targeted as la place du retirement

Glad you're getting photos as you take them as opposed to after you've fecked them about from RAW files. I love my 70D.
Alf McQueef

Cool - Bad Ischl was somewhere we also considered, it may well be done next time!! Mrs ALF had been toi Kaprun skiiing in the past (I'm not a skiier) which was why we went for that. She is already looking at house prices in Austria...

Lu declared "England is a dump compared to Austria" upon her return.

And after a week surviving in the Heathrow short-stay (pre-booked, naturally) someone managed to scrape the rear bumper of the C Max badly yesterday, either in Waitrose or school, which does not match your travails but is annoying nonetheless - chips away will be needed...
Roadrunner

Looks great. I have skied from Kaprun, although that must have been about 20 years ago.

The Alps does look beautiful, although I've never been there out of snow season.
Alf McQueef

I've never been there in the snow season - only to walk or cycle in the summer (and now this more family holiday trip). The Pyranees and Alps are stunning in the summer, that much I can report...
