Audi A5

An impressive mix of dull AND fussy. Very difficult to achieve but Audi have pulled it off!

Autocar put pictures of the outgoing facelifted A5 and I much prefer that, particularly the tail lights.

That is not an improvement. Hard to believe the supposedly more desirable S version is even uglier than the cooking model, too. As for the Merc-style Tesco Hudl stuck on the dash, the less said the better.

Is it a Buick?!

A step backwards.  I really like the current one, aesthetically speaking.

Hmmm.... It is a bit fussy isn't it.

Might improve when you see it in the metal, like so many new cars they just don't seem to work in pictures.

I happened to have one as a loan car the last couple of days. The A5 sport back.

What a let down. However I think the spec had something to do with it. S-line ruined the ride and added no 'sportiness'. Putting dampers into dynamic was a joke and comfort acceptable but noisy. The big wheels of course didn't help either. It was more the engine gearbox combo which wrecked it though. Small diesel with the automatic box. But it also lost traction so easily at the front. Stupid flat bottom steering wheel made handling that a right pain. Only good thing was the bang & Olufson speakers.

One of the comments on Autocar was that it looks a bit like a Tesla. I can see where they're coming from. I remember when Audi used to produce original bold design, this isn't it.

Definitely not an improvement looks wise over the current car although no doubt better in almost every way. It does look very American.
Racing Teatray

I don't mind the side profile (largely because it is very similar to the current one) or the back view but the front is misbegotten and the side swage is overly pronounced giving the car a very odd stance in the 3/4 view.
JohnC

The bonnet creases look all wrong to me as does the front grill.

Ditto.

Although I actually don't mind this new one.

Yes indeed. As with the new R8.
Twelfth Monkey

That's a good call, as it's another variant where I really liked the previous version but am underwhelmed by the new one.

Added some crisp edges to the previous handsome shape so I think this will look good in the metal, like the TT.

I have to look at photos of old and new models to spot the differences - same with any Audi.

If they are of the 'if it's not broken don't fix it' mindset, why bother at all?

Being a car designer for the German manufacturers most be the most frustrating job - open the brief:  Design a new car that looks exactly the same as the old one - you're allowed no more than to change a detail here and there.

Because:

-Over time there is a clear difference (Mk1 TT to Mark 3 - obviously a TT but very different none the less)
-New look will work better with new tech, e.g. headlights
-New interior
