Aston v12 vs gt3 vs r8 v10 vs zr1 in evo

I am saving this article for a lovely read over the weekend, all 4 cars have massive appeal for various reasons ,and I will admit I turned to the last page to read the not suprising conclusion.Just such a shame the corvette is so overpriced here.
"him"

EVO didn't rate the ZR1 at all did they, whereas Autocar (and Clarkson for that matter) loved it?
Dr. Hfuhruhurr

I don't know if it survived the migration, but Colin's review of his rental car confirmed what I suspected from tyre kicking various Corvettes in a local dealer. Of course, the Autocar forum is full of idiot Americans proclaiming it the best car in the world ...

I love corvettes, sure the interiors are shit, but I have driven a few and they all offer as much fun as any car I have ever driven. The zr1 is the uS is (guessing here) £60k and yet it murders pretty much everything speed wise.(n'ring time is 7.24 or something like that).Massive entertainement value for few bucks.
Dr. Hfuhruhurr

But if it's such good VFM for the performance, why not charge a bit more and make the quality better? Typical American car, I'm afraid, headline power and lateral G figures, but only half finished.
Gurney

When I had the GTA serviced tother week at Bauer Millett I had a good poke around a ZR1 that was lurking in the service compound.

Have to say fit and finish, was shall we say, not of the highest order. Mind you in view of the capability to price ratio still an epic car.

Would it sell at a Porsche price properly built though?

quality like the porsche 911 turbo maybe ? Do corvettes catch fire ?
I think the build quality issues are interior related though, mechanically the engines are as robust as anything. But I can understand someone being turned off when they clock the Ikea interior.
Dr. Hfuhruhurr

Well yeah, especially if they've just spent over 100k (which is what a ZR1 costs here).

I know that nauses, but if it were priced like it is in the USA it is unbelievable value for money, makes a gtr look expensive.
Dr. Hfuhruhurr

It depends what are your criteria - for performance alone, it is superb VFM, but in the UK especially, I imagine it would be immensely frustrating - even with the GT3, you're reining it in more often than letting rip, so that's when things other than ultimate performance become more important.

Which is why if I lived and worked in the UK, I'd buy a luxury saloon or big GT.
DaveGibson

With speed limits between 60 and 75mph, I can't see much chance of letting rip in the USA, either.

I agree with that sentiment about such performance, but why buy a saloon if you don't have kids ? I find the r8/carrera 2s levels of performance just about right for the uk,and both now offer civility as good as most Gts I have driven,in fact the new  997 seems to become more of a gt than a sports car.and would you really want to hustle a 2 ton saloon across your favourite country roads ? My old partners penchant for such cars means I have driven pretty much every one possible, the only one that appealed to me is the Bentley arnage ,and that is purely from how it makes you feel just sitting in it.All the others pale into comparison.
Anyway that is my car beef,I don't like large luxo saloons, there are too many other cars that do the same thing much better and take up less space.

I'd vote and take the porker, but there again I've no exposure to yank cars so all the stories of them not handling leave me cold.

That, and Dodge bringing out that new stunning charger has me hankering after old school muscle.

The reason I'm thinking of a luxury saloon next is because I want something completely different. I've driven various "normal" 911s and I know I'd find them disappointing after the GT3, however well they might do the GT thing. And my Maserati itch still needs scratching.

What about a GT type car ?
ALF

It was a good article. I would very, very happily have any of them - except the 'vette!!

Indeed, though provided it doesn't have (a) comedy rear seats, and (b) rock-hard ride because it's pretending to be a sports car. The Maserati Granturismo is as tempting as the Quattroporte, but in most other cases, I prefer the equivalent saloon: I'd rather an XF than an XK, or an S Class over a CL.

absolutely, all the best magazine articles are lovingly marked and left alone until some quality toilet time.
TimR

Just to lower the tone a bit lower I was looking to read some more of the current Evo in the 'reading room' but Mrs Tim appears to have tidied it (the magazine) away and forgotten where
