Apathetic? No...

We were given a MENSA calendar for crimbo, with a new puzzle for each day.  Some of them are interesting enough, others reflect the narrow (I would say binary) view of intelligence that IQ testing and MENSA seem to me to hold.  One of the questions was a list of three words, to which you have to come up with 'opposites' beginning with the letter P.

The third one was Apathetic, so I'll list their answer along with words that Mrs 12th and I came up with.  I'm interested to see what people think, word meanings being the very definition of a non-binary answer.

So, which one do you think is most appropriate?  Obviously I'm not saying which is which at this point!
JohnC

I see I am in agreement with someone!
BeN

Surely the opposite of Apathetic is Pathetic?
Bob Sacamano

Seems I've gone with the majority. I did have to think though.

To think that would suggest the English language logically follows the rules it set itself!

I've recently started listening to The Allusionist podcast by Helen Zaltzman, which is all about etymology, and very interesting. It's quite possible that the meaning of 'pathetic' switched at some point, and therefore 'apathetic' ceased meaning the opposite.

I went with the majority for the OP question, which I therefore assume is incorrect!
Frank Bullitt

Not gone with the majority but my reasoning for each of the two more likely ones was equally tenuous
Chip Butty

apathetic

adjective

" showing or feeling no interest, enthusiasm, or concern ".

I would say the of the 3 words listed, the most appropriate opposite is " passionate "
Michael

I went with passionate but I'm guessing Mensa had other ideas? I'd hazard they've gone with positive as they've assumed apathy is only negative.
Humphrey The Pug

Went with positive, as has one other.
JohnC

Dispassionate means the same as Apathetic so my thinking was that the opposite has to be Passionate. However I see merit in all of the answers, just not as much as this one!
Stuntman

Well I've gone with purposeful, but I can see the case for passionate.
Roadrunner

Passionate
PG

I went with passionate.

What is the case for purposeful?

What is the case for purposeful?

Apathetic - to have no purpose.

Someone who is apathetic couldn't care less about things. Someone who is purposeful does care and is endeavouring to get something done which you might conclude the apathetic individual would never bother doing.

Me, glad I am not on my own any more !

Where have you seen that definition?
Bob Sacamano

The opposite of positive is negative so that one was ruled out early.

I came up with it myself, John C made a better fist of it than me.
Michael

I've always thought apathetic to mean lacking interest rather than to lack purpose.
PhilD

If we are making up our own definitions then this just got a lot easier
Roadsterstu

Went with "passionate". I can see why you might choose "purposeful".  "Positive" much less so.
Big Blue

I was going to answer the poll question but apathy got the better of me.

I see you beat me too it. I should be surprised it took so long but frankly I don't give a f@ck.
Twelfth Monkey

Gee, thanks for sharing.  At least you weren't apathetic about it...

MENSA must be quaking in its boots that you lot generally agree with its conclusions!  I went for purposeful, and it's a suitable opposite based upon OED definitions.  I suppose what I really don't like is the attitude that there is only one answer, which sums up the MENSA mentality to me.
PhilD

Calendar rage! Maybe we should do a forum calendar (again?) ti help calm you down
Twelfth Monkey

Not a bad idea!

(The first part wasn't aimed at everyone, lest I be misunderstood.)
PhilD

Did we do it once? I'm thinking our cars, not, for example,  a naked Chris M with his bucket and sponge hiding his blushes...
Twelfth Monkey

I think Blarno was in the driving seat.
Racing Teatray

Calendar? You mean this one? I happened to find it just the other day whilst having an office clear-out:

Jan - Z1 in snow
Feb - 320i on its side
Mar - Silver Shadow
Apr - 325ti in Dales
May - A2 group shot
Jun - Frogeye
Jul - GT3 at Reims
Aug - Avantime at 'Ring
Sept - TT by lake
Oct - Irish MINI
Nov - GTA in Finland
Dec - 325ti with Susten sunset.
Twelfth Monkey

I wonder what happened to my copy?  Can't help but notice the old (but then reasonably young) engine near the middle...
BeN

Mine is stashed somewhere in my room...

Another one sounds like a good idea.

If you wait for 2019, it would be a "10 years on" calendar !

However, we could have a go for 2018
Humphrey The Pug

Mine went missing.

I'm detecting some bitterness Humph?!

I don't even remember them being made!

Did I miss the official answer, or has it not been revealed yet?

Depends if you would say 62% constitutes "generally"

Maybe start another poll?
simonp

So I missed the answer AND the calendar? Must try harder! 📝
PhilD

I thought the calendar was a few years ago
simonp

It was, but today is the first time I've known about it. 🤔

I wonder if any of those tiny photos on the front are of my car of the time?
Michael

If you can spot it here then it's likely on there:

It wasn't, it was 2009!

Rows 11-19 not found, sadly. That brings back some memories; more than a few cars there I don't remember at all!

Saying that, I thought I'd entered at least one shot of my Legacy, but unless it's in the missing rows it would appear not.
BeN

For what it's worth I think I have a lot more pictures to contribute now...
Michael

I think we'd have to have a veto on the Prius. It's not something I'd want to look at for a month.
BeN

I hasten to add, not of my own car of course! I don't think the Lancer's a looker too...

I think it looks good here!

Michael

It was a real pain rigging it to include two Compacts last time, I don't want to have to do all that again.

FTFY.....

I went with Purposeful, as that to me is the polar opposite of apathetic.
Twelfth Monkey

Another one today, which was to select a word meaning boy, and add a letter to it which means joyous.  They were after lad and glad.  Glad is much lower down the 'ecstatic' scale, in the way that scared is beneath terrified.  I am not impressed with Mensa when it comes to things that are graduated.

If this interests you not one jot, waste no time in replying and move on.  There'll be a post about cars just a click away!

I think this just proves that plain intelligence is not enough to make someone better. Some of the most intelligent people I know are so thick (in a know how to do useful day to day things kind of way) it defies belief.

One of my clients sits on a University panel that decides who gets on to the medicine course: they are no longer necessarily just taking those with the best grades because some have no ability to communicate, empathise or exercise common sense. I think you still need 4 A's and a B to get in instead of the 5 A's previously but at least Mensa type intelligence isn't being considered to be the only measure of capability anymore.
PhilD

That one is a bit easier 12th!
