A direct comparison between Ford and Vauxhall

Earlier this week, I collected a brand new Ford Transit 2.0 diesel low-roof plain-Jane van in Hull, and drove it to the client in Dartford, where I took his 'old' van back to the depot in Weybridge. The return van was a Vauxhall  Movano with a 2-litre diesel. The Movano was also a no-frills 'basic' van.

Comparing the looks, there's no contest. The Vauxhall wins hands down, as the new Transit is such a munter. It would lose in comparing it to Susan Boyle, tbh, so ugly is it.

Performance: again, big win by the Vauxhall. Both had 6-speed manual boxes, but that didn't help the Transit, as it really lacks torque. And top-end power. The Vauxhall, on the other hand, was just so eager to get a move on. More torque, more 'revability' and it sounded better too.

Driving position/adjustability of seat and controls. Vauxhall again - the Ford gave me a back ache after 150-or so miles. The Movano's seat has extraordinary height adjustment, which made it so easy to find a long-lasting comfortable driving position.

Handling: Yep - Vauxhall again. It drove like a big car, whereas the Transit would really load up its front wheel that was on the outside of a turn, on turn-in, before it would settle down.

The only thing I preferred in the Transit was the instruments and dash design (although the Movano's radio was better). Oh, the Movano was silver so the black Tranny won that contest....

I thought I was seeing a lot of LDV's, then realised they were actually the new big Transits.

What are these 'vans' of which you speak?

New Transits are just plain wrong. Even the Connects are pig ugly.

They need to do a retro copy of the classic 70's Transit design. They'd sell way more.
