2015 engine development - only Honda can't update

http://www.planet-f1.com/news/321...aren-Honda-Question-Engine-Ruling

If this is true, what a total joke! They meant to say engines were only able to be changed until the first race of 2015, but forgot (why is it too late to change that?). Only Honda - as a new entrant - got the rules intended for all.

Now people are saying that's fine as Honda should play by the rules the others did last year. Excuse me? Are we saying that new entrants to a sport should play by last year's rules, not the current year's? WTF!!!

Yeahh I read this a few days ago, the other teams have found this loophole, makes a mockery really, but then what isn't a mockery in F1!!?

I didn't read it as that. The rules were badly drafted so that in year two (of the new engines) developments are permitted throughout the year. It's not that Honda is having to play by last year's rules and the others not, but instead, as they are in year one, then in-season developments are not permitted for them under the rules.

Still unfair though!

In my link the FIA are very clearly stating that the rules were supposed to say 2015 engines would be frozen at the first race. Only they cocked them up. In which case Honda are working on last years rules.

This is what I don't get:

"Because Honda's new engine is racing for the first time 2015, the FIA believes it is "fair and equitable" that Honda complies with the same restrictions as its rivals last year."

It is just so typical of F1!

That's my point! Read both articles. The rules spanned 2 years (maybe more) and while year 1 was clear (engine design submitted before first race) for year 2 it wasn't stated. As Honda are in year 1 they have to abide by this rule, it's not "last years rules" as such.

Still fucking stupid!

I get what you are saying but the effect is still one team effectively operating on the 2014 regime in 2015, with all the other teams able to update their engines all year.

Hopefully they will come to a compromise and either lock them all down or (as the manufacturers seem happy to pay for it) allow them all to update whenenver they want - which seems better for the sport. It all makes a mockery of cost savings but then so did changing the engine specs in the first place.
Big Blue

I reckon we'll see a resolution to this after McLaren Honda have run in anger at the first pre-season test. If they are allowed to carry on with development, their engine is a crock
