'kin wonderful!The scouse family all had flu last week (on half term - what fun!) with me finally giving in and going to bed on friday evening.Having got rid of the worst of it by monday it settled into an ear infection instead - in my bloody good ear! - which hurts like a bugger especially when I swallow. Now I've broken out in so many coldsores I look like Joseph Merrick with a heroin addiction. Like I said 'kin wonderful! |

Ditto - you end up giving it to your colleagues so safer all round to stay at home. Seeing as I can work from home that's what I do, though not had a day off for several years - amazing what self-employment does. |

I've been shit in the last week and it has culminated in a chest infection that I've now got antibiotics for.
I haven't had a decent nights sleep in almost a week and took my first sick day off in at least 4 years on Monday. Starting to feel a little better now. |

At least you have some credibility though. If i phone up sick then at least people know its going to be genuine. Some of the sicknotes in here you could set your watch by, ie every monday morning.

When I was at Rolls-Royce in the seventies we had one colleague whose regular absences caused the manager to say she was the first woman he'd ever come across who had a period every two weeks. These days, he'd probably get sued for sex discrimination. | ||

It's amazing in Germany, where employees (though not contractors like me) get so many sick days per year on full pay. Some of them seem to regard this limit as a target ... | ||

When I was with BL/Istel/AT&T, etc. after about five years' service we qualified for a full year's illness on full pay. In fact, early on we were in receipt of NI sick pay, on top, but that was later netted off. A friend ended up getting just that. Both his doctor and the company's doctor advised him to retire on medical grounds but the HR manager said he'd hardly been off work and refused to allow him to leave. His doctor then stopped his drugs, because they were wrecking his liver, with the result that his joints seized up (he had rheumatioid arthritis) so he then spent the next year off work, before the HR manager approved. He was even promoted during his absence. |

Australians are the same. Their allocated sick leave is treated as extra holiday and they'll phone in sick even when they're not. |
