Volkswagen Bus:

Originally the brainchild of Dutchman Ben Pon; VW introduced the First "Type II" in 1949 (the Type l was the Beetle) and it was named the Bulli (meaning "Workhorse").

Volkswagen Bus poster. (available at artofmotoring).

The Microbus was born in 1950 with two-tone paint and a big cast aluminium 'VW' logo on the front and rear. Affectionately known as "Splitties" (due to the split windscreen) the VW Bus was a vehicle with great character.

Able to carry eight people or a 15-hand horse, it's regarded by enthusiasts as the zenith of Type II production and was produced for 18 years with many developments and variations.

This beautiful Volkswagen Omnibus in light tan tweed with vinyl bucket seats and an L shaped seat behind the driver's seat is a real classic:

The confusion arises with the Type Twos being called Type 1-5 given which generation.

We have an original (1970s?) set of that very Samsonite luggage shown in the nose of the Type 3. Nice thread, Dan.

I love the 'bus with all the roof windows. Gorgeous vehicle. Might have to "do a kraftwerk" and indulge some time.

Yes, I really liked the VW Space-UP! concept because it had those too.

That'll be a Samba. The only buses ever correctly named as such, have either 21 or 23 windows.

I knew you'd appreciate it.

I love that album and it should only be listened to from beginning to end.

Incidentally, have you seen the DVD, Minimum Maximum? Fantastic versions of TEE and Metal on Metal[/i] along with the superb visuals of really scary-looking European locomotives.

Highly recommended... (and only £11-odds)

I've always liked this, the Type 147 Fridolin.

There's a German mentalist has chopped one with Audi W12 Quattro motor and running gear.

There was a car like that at Silverstone this past weekend....... luckily the weather was nice, so the roof remained down.

I don't think it was that particular car, though, as it was more of a green-y blue than that. Sounds like at least Triumph "Innsbrucks" have been ruined?!

As Chris mentioned it, it would seem rude not to bring it up again (a highly apt term in this case!)

Yep, you're all going to have to do a lot better in order to beat this:

Hood down doesn't convey the full horror!

I feel we should nominate the Ferrari 550 Barchetta in part 3 of Colin's Silverstone report

Yes, that was a complete joke. I could have made a better hood for it myself - and I'm not being sarcastic.

And the Murcielago Spyder has a similar badly fitting tarpaulin arrangement. Still want one though ... I'd just have a bespoke cover made for it. Possibly by you, Piers ...
