I cleared out the garage yesterday and had a trial fitting in there for the Fiat (before I put all the junk back in prior to moving it to my parents garage ) and I was struck by how strong and sweet the smell of the fumes was.

Is that normal?

At least I couldn't smell burnt oil

I'm not sure about sweet but when I back the TR into my garage, the fumes are so strong that my eyes water. At least it doesn't have any lead in it these days.

My dad's XJ-S was like that.  It may have had something to do with the valve stem seals as it used to smoke like hell when it was first started and smelled like it was running really really rich.

I love the smell of petrol. Then again, I like the smell of most hydrocarbon solvents.

When I ran my 309 on Toluene, it gave off a lovely, potent, pungent whiff.

The AX currently has about 10 litres of Methanol in it's tank and that's a strange pong...

The TR doesn't burn oil but it does run on carbs and is obviously pre-catalyst so there are quite a lot of unburnt gases.

I'm another fan of the smell. Bloody lovely stuff. But then a fair few of us here have it in our veins...

That isn't something to be inhaled for long periods...

Or very good for the engine long term!

.....Not just veins, I had to drain the tank on the frog couple of months ago, only way to do it was disconnect the fuel line at the pump and suck...you can guess the rest.

Never did me any harm *twitch*

I didn't run the 309 on Toly for long, just a brief period when I was between jobs and waiting for payment! Went like buggery, though!

Super unleaded stinks though - like regular unleaded mixed with cat piss.
