When (if?) you buy CDs, do you ever/often look at the sleeve notes? I must admit I pretty much gave up when every single one seemed to be photos of randomness, nothing to do (overtly anyway) with the band or just shots of fans at gigs or the like.

Bit of a mistake in every case though I fear. Caught a programme on BBC3 on Saturday, all about Dave Grohl and his mission to rescue the sound board from Sound City studios, and was, frankly, amazed at all the people who are on the album; I knew Stevie Nicks was on it (kinda hard to miss, really!) but Josh Homme, Trent Reznor and even Paul McCartney are on too, along with a good number of others I can't remember off the top of my head.

Anyone else found any surprises on album sleeves/notes?

If you Wikipedia Grohl you'll see that all those people are merely repaying the favour because he has drummed on their albums at some point. Very prolific performer, that Dave G!

Great film, half way through at present. Love BBC4 on Friday nights!

I sometimes get round to reading them after a few years - usually to find out what song 7 is actually called, or something like that.

We binned all our CD cases a few years back and put the CDs themselves in those hardcase things but I made sure to keep all the sleeve notes.

What do you mean? Tre Cool said this about DG?

Could be:

I got a rock and roll band (he has)
I got a rock and roll life (he has)
I got a rock and roll girlfriend (at the time of writing Grohl hadn't married 2nd wife...)
And another ex-wife (he had one of those)

I got a rock and roll house (no doubt)
I got a rock and roll car (no doubt)
I play the shit out the drums (well known for it)
And I can play the guitar (very good at that too)

I got a kid in New York (let's not dwell on the guy's kids...)
I got a kid in The Bay
I haven't drank or smoked nothin'
In over 22 days (Grohl is well known for his anti substance abuse-stance and in 2000 was done for DD in Australia)

Probably nothing like this but I always associate that section of Homecoming with Dave Grohl (who I really like and admire, BTW). What does it matter: nobody loves me; nobody cares....

I've seen interviews with him before (think there was one about Nirvana a while back) and he seems a thoroughly nice bloke.

You could be right, it all fits, but don't know of any Green Day/Dave Grohl associations.

Thinking about it, I appear to be a bit of a DG stalker:- I've seen Foo Fighters 5 times, including encores where he played with Queen and Led Zepplin (sans Robert Plant), Them Crooked Vultures, Queens of the Stone Age, Juliette and the Licks, Tenacious D all with DG on drums.

And him on his own doing an acoustic set at V Festival.

Sleeve notes are a great way of finding out who your heroes' heroes are. I read them in depth to find out where and when the album was recorded, on what equipment and who helped out. You also get some pretty cool soundbites and snippets of forthcoming song or album titles. One of my favourite sleeve note quotes comes from Living Colour's classic Time's Up LP:

Freedom of expression is not negotiable - fight all forms of censorship.

Words to live by.
