My Car: Volvo XC60/Ford Fiesta/Jaguar XJ

The Volvo is due to go back at the end of April so now it's time to be on the look out for something new. I have to admit that I've been bitten by the 4X4 bug so the shortlist is currently heavy with those:

5 door Evoque
Discovery Sport (if I can get one under £300pcm)
Skoda Kodiak
X3 (as per disco, image)
Audi Q5 (as per disco, dull as dishwater)
Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee (as per disco, reliability)
VW Tiguan (duller than the Q5)
VW Toureg (as per disco)
Another XC60 - only problem is the new one due out autumn time, but by the same token there as some decent deals on high spec cars.

Left field choice is the Audi S5 that one of the companies we use are offering at £330 pcm with 6 months down.....

Any other ideas?

I tend to agree that getting into another XC60 might leave you wishing for the new model. Unless the deal is simply stunning on a high spec car.
Disco Sport sounds good, as does 12th's suggestion of the F Pace.
I've never really been a fan of the X3 but I have kittle idea what the current car is like.

Isn't the Tuareg getting on a bit now?

Would a Mercedes GLC be out of budget? It must be similar to the X3 and Disco Sport. If you can go more mainstream I keep seeing loads of Kia Sportage' about which must mean they do something right.

Of the cars you mention, Audi S5, otherwise Evoque but as others have suggested, I'd also be taking a peak in the Jaguar dealership to see what I could have in the way of an XE or XF.

Try the Sportage - I had a sit in one straight after an XC60 and it felt like an extremely nice place to be, it was the many launch version they do so the dash was leather, for example, but even so it was very, very tidy. Despite initially thinking they looked worse than the original I've come around now.

I have to say I keep "noticing" the Sportage when one passes rather than it being invisible like most normal cars. However they are popular so the monthly rates aren't as good as some of those you listed which might be getting a leg up from the manufacturer to get them out the door.

New Q5 coming and some very good new Tiguan deals around. Depends on your mileage but I looked at a Touareg recently for a client and you would be a good bit over £300/mth. From memory, somewhere around £390 + VAT with no extras for the model and mileage he wanted. (is your figure inclusive or exclusive of VAT)

Evoque and Disco Sport looks the most interesting out of that lot.

My choice would be a Macan but I suspect the budget might not stretch to it.

I have a client who got an Edge to replace their Kuga - they love it but the wife says it's too big to park. They think it is a class above the Kuga in terms of finish and it is very quiet on the road when the head off to their residential caravan every weekend!

I'd be tempted to also consider a 12 month lease on another XC60 as I suspect there will be some good short term deals around.

S5 option also interested me, as that was my initial focus when looking before Xmas but having sat in one the rear space/access was a bit tight for my two boys.

At that price for the brand new model I'd definitely go for that but I suspect it's the old model?

I struggle with the looks of the Discovery Sport, from the rear 3/4 view it always reminds me of a Skoda Roomster.

Surely an Audi S5 would be worth a little extra outlay.

A mooch around the Liverpool dealers brought up a couple more options:

Audi A5 coupe/sport back. Very very nice inside, coupe a real good looking car, cracking deals available. Downside would be levering myself in and out of it and kids complaining about lack of rear doors on coupe

Audi A4 avant. As per a5 for cabin. Not much against.

Mercedes C class estate/GLC. Again very nice, especially in AMG line trim. Except for the plonked on screen in the middle of the dash (seriously, who the fuck thought that looked good?) and the internal door release is the nastiest piece of shit I've come across in a long time- horribly cheap & nasty to the touch and to use. I just know it'd annoy me every time I touched it.
CLS estate. Just gorgeous. Right on the edge of budget and only SE trim. Jealousy of pater.

Jaguar XE/XF. Seriously considering in 180 Rsport trim. Green with black pack or red with black pack & red seat inserts.

Having driven both XE and XF diesel - but in the lower 163bhp guise - I'd go for the XF if you possibly can.

On the other hand can you make an XE R Sport 2.0 Petrol work (they come in 200hp and 240hp guise)? They're cheaper than the diesels in price and a quick look on a couple of leasing sites shows the 200 version is only a few £ different to the 180 diesel. When I had one for a week it was way better than the diesel and felt quite sporty.

If you've contemplated the S5 Sportback, what about a 4GC?

Deals are probably even more cracking and even the 420i/d are smooth and swift. 430i is a turbo 4-pot these days too so probably cost-effective to run.

Or, if you like the Audis, what about the A4 Allroad? It's a very polished bit of kit and does as much 4x4 as most of us will ever need without the tittery. There's a cheaper Alltrack Passat wagon too.

I'll be honest and say that Audi's didn't do much for me, but a good poke about in the dealer the other day changed my mind. A5/Sportback/A4 Avant are now seriously tempting.
Allroad/Alltrack I just don't like. I'd sooner have the driving position & ease of access of a 'proper' 4x4.

Waiting on the quotes from Jaguar before deciding. Can't believe they've dropped the shootingbrake though.

Have you tried an Allroad? They have more ride height that you'd think. I have a couple of friends with them who swear by them.

Only because I also looked at the S5 SB. I would have liked anything but a BMW to be honest, but the deal on mine was too good to ignore compared to what Audi/Jag/MB/Alfa could muster.

My 440i GC was £39k post-discount with finance at 2.9% APR.

Specced to match and with best discount applied:

- Jag XE-S was £44k with 4.9% APR
- C43 AMG 'wagon was £47k with 5.5% APR
- S5 Sportback was £48k with 6.2% APR

Moreover, the BMW also had the second lowest GFV (Jag was lowest), meaning that made the total amount payable over 4 years (ie deposit plus total monthlies plus final balloon):

- BMW: £42,060
- Jag: £46,311
- Audi: £50,850
- Merc: £53,341

None of this matters if you are a cash buyer, but if you are going down the finance route, it bears very close scrutiny. And there was simply no scenario in which it made sense to pay £8k more for the S5 over the 440i GC.

I'd considered similar but the A4/A5/C Class were too tight in the back/poor access for my teens, fine for short trips but a pain for them on longer trips to grandparents.

CLS Shooting brake is a very nice thing. If you'd consider used then you get a lot of 2 or 3 yr old C350 AMG for not much monthly payment. Will look at them again at some point.

On the 4GC, it's not so much that the back seat is tight for leg room, but rather that the door aperture is small and there's not a huge amount of head room. I imagine the A5/S5 Sportback is similar, although I gather it has a longer wheelbase than the coupe, whereas the 4GC has the same wheelbase as the 2dr 4.

My BIL had the A5 SB and it is very similar to the 4GC. The door aperture is a bit bigger but anyone over 5'10" is going to have to slouch a bit or have their head rubbing the headcloth. I would say that leg room is very similar.

Some of the SB's were also 4 seaters, incl all the S5's, so be careful if looking at used ones.

All change on the car front. Final three choices are:-

Audi A6 Avant 2.0 TDI Ultra SE Executive 5dr (£309 pcm, 3&36)

Volvo V90 Diesel Estate 2.0 D4 Inscription 5dr Geartronic (£358pcm 3&36)

BMW 520d Msport Touring - (£288pcm but 6&24 and not the new 5 series)

I suspect I'd look closely at the Volvo, before deciding an extra £70 a month could be spent on more exciting things than a Volvo estate and go with the BMW, especially as it's only 2years and the new one looks so similar to the very good current one.

Same here for the same reasons, although if company car tax is a consideration then it looks like the Audi is going to be the cheapest overall, with the BMW costing £30-40/month more in tax than the other two for a higher rate taxpayer, which offsets the difference in monthlies.

Some comparative factoids to consider:

Audi lists at £38k as an auto. 187bhp. SE Executive is standard trim despite the name (nav and xenons but no leather). 114 g/km 64mpg allegedly. 140mph /8.2 secs. Range: 1,027 miles (73 litre tank). Luggage capacity: 565 litres

BMW lists at £39k as an auto. 193bhp. MSport is top dog trim (nav, xenons and standard leather).  123g/km. 60mpg allegedly. 140mph. 7.7 secs. Range: 924 miles (70 litre tank). Luggage capacity: 560 litres

Volvo – lists at £38k (auto only). 193bhp. Inscription is the luxury trim level. 119 g/km. 62mpg allegedly. 140mph. 8.2 secs. Range: 750 miles. (55 litre tank). Luggage capacity: 723 litres

The Audi (2011) isn't much shorter in the tooth than the 5-series (launched 2010).

I'd be tempted by the Volvo out of that lot but don't know what the engines like. Its only £27 a month more expensive if you add in the real costs.

The Volvo will surely be the more future proof over the coming three years as the basic electrical architecture of the BMW and Audi is that much older. With both cars due replacement soon, they could quickly feel old even though the new versions are hardly going to offer radical styling changes. I like the Volvo for being different too, it's a great looking car that brings a unique style to the class. That's not to say you'd be disappointed with either of the other two, mind.

I think it's great that a Volvo is in the mix, and many of us favour it or can't decide - they are clearly doing something right. Or is that we are now all old giffers?*

*including Michael but he is also going through a midlife crises, selling the Volvo, and getting a Porsche or motorbike or something.

I'd consider the Volvo, then get the 520d and swap it for a new one / something different in 2 years.

Unless I really wanted the Volvo, I'd be tempted by the BMW as it is only 24 months and then you can see what else is about.

BMW not budging on price or term, in fact alluding to price rise of £50 unless taken today.
Been offered the A6 in S-line trim for same money as SE, which is seriously taken my fancy. Better looking inside & out than the 5, £50 a month cheaper than the Volvo.
