100 Greatest Drivers' Cars - look away if you don't want to know the winner ( at bottom of post! )

My friend's car in at 22!...but a bit surprised at the order of the rest, Escort Cosworth ahead of the Sierra(?) ( and a 4wder at that ) although it's all subjective

Quite impressed by how quick the TT RS is .... 11.1 to 100

And for Racing, a new Fast Fleet entrant, lightly used 135i that they're going to work on to get close to the new M3 laptime-wise

Will be following the development of the  135i and old TT with interest

Surprised the Escort Cosworth manages to break into the top 100. Didn't the Vivster say it was shit when he compared it with the Focus RS a few issues back ?. Slow, horrid engine, etc, etc

I guess they must have taken Barker's comments in the past into account as well though    ....or at least a conglomerate of EVO writers as there are a few cars in there that have had less than favourable reviews from some of the EVO people in days gone by

The 90  cars after the top 10 seem in a random order anyway. There are 5 star cars way after 4-star ones ( their own ratings ). I guess they just bunged them in in any order apart from the top 10

A worthy winner, though not hard to understand the choice, given that their big shot chief actually has one. It would certainly be my super-exotic of choice.

Does look nice...and I'm certainly not in a position to argue with the winner for them.
Spot of car-nepotism involved though with the 78 choice methinks.

I still maintain the 90 remainders were just lumped into the 100 in no apparent order

John Hayman's Lancia...not saying it can't be included....but in front of some of the other stuff? Rose-tinted glasses I'd suggest unless it's just a collection rather than a ranking.

The order they placed all the cars did seem a little bit odd. The F355 when it was launched was seen as the best drivers car ever and yet it only comes in 91st place where as the 612 comes in 20 places higher.
I'm surprised they only placed the Macca F1 in 71st but I guess the top ten were made up of cars they knew they could get hold of.

Out of the rest, I've driven a Golf Mk2 GTi, and Exige and a Diablo. (Although that was a 2WD SV, not a VT)

I'm a bit disappointed that the Vauxhall Belmont 1.3L didn't make it TBH.

Number 4 caught my eye - Caterham R300. I drove one at Bedford and it was ghastly. Very fast but I felt like I was going to fall out at every corner, and couldn't avoid pushing two pedals simultaneously. And I'm not all that big (6 foot, 11 stone).

I've never driven any of them. In fact, the only one that I've even been in is the Mk 1 Escort RS2000. I've also been in a Mini Cooper S but it was 1966 registered not 1963-4 as listed. Both were owned by my landlady's  son when I lived in lodgings in Derby.

It was a long time ago, in the seventies, towards the bottom end of Byron Street (No. 22 to be precise) on the edge of Normanton. Before that I lived at the top of Swinburne Street.

Lionel was a very nice car to drive, I'd love to be brave enough to get a Rallye, but they're far too fragile if you haven't the skills of Spannerman and build all the parts yourself

I've owned or driven none. The closest I've come to any of them is driving an M3 and a MINI Cooper.
I've been passengered in a Mk2 Golf GTi and two Mk2 RS2000's. My dad owned those three when I was a nipper.

Beats me then Rodge. I only owned 2 RS and another 1300-> 1600> 1760 Mk2.
The Escorts were very popular with my group of friends when we started driving. I think we had just about every variant between us of the sporty Mk1/Mk2s bar the Mk1 Twincam and RS1600

I'm with you there Chris - I had a Manta GTE ( coupe ) for over 6 years. Even better fun rwd-er than the Mk2 Escort. Much better suspension as standard imo and more stable over bumpy roads. I remember when I got mine my friend still had his black Mk2 RS2000 and we took them both down our local 'test route' as you are wont to do when young. We would have been pretty evens if I'd had my RS2000 as well but even though I was new to the Manta it  was  so unfazed by the bumps and mid-corner cambers etc that I was able to open up a gap....even though in a straight line his RS ( about 135bhp - slightly modded ) was faster than the 110bhp of the Manta.
I guess only John Barker would've possibly voted for the Manta though - I'm not sure if he had a good experience of his early one

just looking again at that list ..996 gt3 so high up...this is a car that as far as I have been told is completely unusable as a daily car...i mean truly uncomfortable to drive on the road...yet no 997 gt3 (yes they have the rs but not the regular one) and no 996 turbo (maybe they all burnt up).

just looking again at that list ..996 gt3 so high up...this is a car that as far as I have been told is completely unusable as a daily car...i mean truly uncomfortable to drive on the road...yet no 997 gt3 (yes they have the rs but not the regular one) and no 996 turbo (maybe they all burnt up).

The only 911 I have driven is a 996TT at Avon park raceway and i thought it was fantastic. I  suspect I'd find the GT3/GT2/997 just as good though as I have nothing to compare them to other than a passenger ride on the road in an old 4-speed 911 Turbo

I know I'll never be in theposition of driving as many of those cars reasonably hard on the road as the EVO guys. I can only look at the more everyday cars

Then again, i might be aside from the norm as I preferred the 4.3 v8 Vantage I drove to the Gallardo

The aston is a far more charismatic car ,so nothing strange in that.

I'd like to try the new V12 Vantage as driven by Clarkson in the last Top Gear ending.
I liked the old DB7 one I tried

Hoping to try a GT2 later in the year on an Experience Day

I'm a bit behind, I only just picked the mag up yesterday.

I see Mr Porter is a fan of the current Alfa range

I've not read much of it yet....

I agree with a lot of what he has to say but I think he's totally wrong about the GT (not just because I had/want one) and the MiTo I drove had no torque steer at all rather than the 'whole bucket' of the one he tried.

The GT was supposed to die when the Brera came along but demand from the paying public has kept it alive.

And, in my opinion, it looks a lot more attractive than the Scirocco.

Maybe I should go on the EVO forum and have a rant

I agree with most of what he says as well, Alfa are far too 'Boulevard' for me at the moment. All show and not much go. Interesting to learn the other day that the GM V6 and 4 cylinders were foisted upon Alfa as part of the Fiat/GM deal and Alfa engineers absolutely loathe them.

Still, no excuse for the belated introduction of the 1750Tbi not to mention the non introduction of the twin turbo diesel - been in a Saab for ages.

It seems they also have a V6 diesel on the stocks which makes equivalent BMW/Jag diesels look filthy CO2 wise. Again if so where the hell is it.

Far too slow at bringing new tech out, same goes for MultiAir.

Rant over.

Anyone else think those new Renault Megane coupes look very similar to the Scirocco?

To me the Megane looks bloated and top heavy, the Scirocco far more athletic.

I don't like the Scirocco now, familiarity has not improved the looks, quite the opposite.  The Megane is just awful, especially the special edition one with the randomly tacked on bodywork.  I saw one last week and talk about looking like it had driven through Halfrauds!!

The Alfa GT is probably the most attractive car in the current line up, well second behind the 159 Ti perhaps.  However, the interior........

The Scirocco, like the Passat CC, starts well at the front but goes rapidly wrong as you head rearwards. The new Megane is just foul though, in both 3- and 5-door form.

I'm with you on the Scirocco - the rear is just so heavy as to ruin what should be a sleek and smooth shape. But for the me the Passat CC is almost the exact opposite. Apart from some overly large lights, the rear shape is quite flowing. Then I go roud the front and whilst it looks OK on its own, it does not seem to go with the back. But I want to like the CC as you've got to applaud VW for having the guts to make it in the first place.

Finally read EVO 135 yesterday: a bit disappointing, actually, the top 100 took up most of the magazine but didn't actually have very much substance. Perhaps half the staffers were on holiday.
