A quick passenger ride in this yesterday morning. An acquaintance who used to have a CLS350CDi estate pulled up alongside me and tooted his horn. At first I thought he had just traded the CLS for an E Class estate but the blip of the throttle told me otherwise.

We didn't go very far but not very far was covered in not very long! Thug in a duffle coat describes it I think. God it is brutal but it is big and slightly unwieldy as well.

The seats are lovely and the interior has a quality feel that is dating a bit but on a dry road it is quick with a crowd turning soundtrack. Like the C63 I drove a few years ago, it is easy to light up the rears but some sensible use of the throttle at low speeds and it just goes. It feels heavy though and I got the feeling that it would need a bit of room to use it properly.

However as a carry all estate (which tows a Karting trailer most weekends) with massive overtaking capability it certainly has character.

Don't know if I would buy one but I certainly liked it.

Driven quite a few e class amg's ,the n/a engine one is sublime and nearly tempted me,the turbo ones I found nowhere near as good.

Also one would be mad to buy one over an rs6.

Until they go out of warranty! RS6 bills can be notoriously high.

They are a lot cheaper that RS6's, and just for me personally and RS6 is not an especially appealing car, nor one I would expect to be able to run without robbing a bank.

E63's have always appealed to me, but they are almost wilfully bland outside and in, plus there is a confusing array of different engines and gearboxes. Most sources seem to suggest the majority are mechanically sound to big mileages however. They lack the "want" factor of C63's for me...

I am feeling a lot of want for an E63 at the moment, but even the most creative man maths do not stack up.

But so can bills for faulty Mercedes air suspension!
