Hideous and tasteless art school formula design, eye wateringly so. But I've no doubt that people will buy it, after all, they buy German premium 4x4's and they're universally hideous and tasteless.

If this does turn out to be a small (or should that be smaller) Range Rover then that has to be a good thing and it will sell. They will have to make it a bit special or I';m not sure how they will differentiate it from the Freelander. I can't see it being only a three door?

If it looks that good in real life it'll sell in spades. Easily the best looking small 4x4 I've seen in years.
I've never considered an SUV before but I'd consider that. Jaguar/Land Rover seem to be designing desirable vehicles again - at last.

I'd assumed those simply were a Freelander just with a forthcoming facelift or something - if they are in fact the final incarnation of the LRX, then what's the point?

I'm not too surprised by the positive comments here as I know I'm waaaaaaaaaaaay out of step with some modern design. Well, I'd argue that it hasn't been "designed." It's just a vulgar design school pastiche of in vogue design clues lacking any true imagination, flare, grace, beauty or anything else positive. Many will think it'll look great on the cover of a car mag but the only reaction this monstrosity will ever get from me is and urge to look away. Quickly. Yuk. Hideous.

Don't you drive an MX-5, which is a design school pastiche of design clues from the Lotus Elan and therefore lacking any real imagination?

Yes, but in a good way. I have said here that the original MX5 can't be viewed as a design classic in its own right because it pays homage to the British classics. But, the MX5 is good to look at and it isn't vulgar and this RR is hideous and vulgar IMVHO and brings nothing attractive or new. It'll still sell though because this is the sort of thing that does but it's just not my cup of tea at all.

So what you're saying is; Lotus Elan design cues in a MX-5 = good, in your opinion, and traditional Range Rover design cues in a Landrover LRX = bad, again in your opinion.

I'm not having a go, Alan, but design, much like art, music etc is subjective. One man's delight in a 60s classic reinterpreted for the 90s is another's re-warmed over mince, lacking any taste or substance.

I wouldn't say that this latest thing has classic RR clues, not with my glasses on I wouldn't...or rather that they are there but they're taken to extremes and that's something that the MK1 and 2 MX5 didn't do.

No, I'd say that this latest RR has more in common with current design trends than past LR design clues. We've seen it all before at least on the computer screen if not on a real car, there's nothing new here and nothing pleasing for me personally. It wouldn't look out of place on the cover of Max Power.

Yes, art and beauty are subjective and whenever I slag something like this (vulgar pile of poo lacking any grace or subtlety) off I'm always careful to point out that it's just my view and that I know I'm in the minority. I'm right, of course, and one day you'll all come to your senses and agree with me. Until that day I'm happy to tell it like I see it, IMVHO.

Time often changes views but I'm pretty sure that cars like the Elan and MX5 will always be thought of as pretty cars and the original Range Rover will always be viewed as a classic too but I'm also pretty sure that one day design will move on and leave stranger and more transitory stuff like this RR behind. And thank God for that. IMVHO, of course.

It's not just this RR I don't like. I can't think of a single German (Land Rover like) off roader that I like either, they all look like vulgar excesses to me too.

I don't think that a great design has to be classically good looking or timeless but it does need something special, the X Factor if you like. I'm sure that there are cars that aren't classically good looking or timeless that will always be classics but I don't think that the RR is one of them. Time will tell.
