Been thinking about getting shut of mine.  Can't really think of a particular reason, still runs well enough, just getting bored, fancy a change etc.

Been thinking Cooper S, my budget would stretch to an early one, before they changed the supercharger to a turbocharger. (or other way round)

Would appreciate input.

The Mk1 Cooper S was supercharged.

'Turbonutter' has one I believe?  try and get one with an LSD if you can (though I am note sure how rare they are?)

What do you need to sink into it? Just run it. I suspect that it's hardly going to rust away in front of your eyes like a '70s Fiat.

Well the rust is the main thing.  Its eating into both arches, the drivers side is terrible.  Stuttering when cold still isnt sorted but i think i will be able to fix this next time i get paid.  It's not like its a money pit but ive had it nearly 4 years, no logical reason to sell it just fancy a change.

Not decided anything just throwing ideas around.

Nissan Maxima 'QX' it is then

I suspect many Cooper S's have either been a) abused to death or b) driven by tarts who do 23mph maximum and the engine has never loosened up

How bad? Bubbling under the paint or real holes? Mine has just started bubbling so I figure another year or so and it might be time to get it done.

I too get the itch but I've a burning desire to see 200K miles on the clock just to really get my monies worth.

and to answer your question, get a 330CI.

Rusting away at 10 years old? My neighbour's 1989 Rover 214 had barely any rust when he replaced it, at 18 years of age with almost 200K on the clock, two years ago.

mine literally (at 12 yrs) has a few bubbles on the back of the rear arches - a well known E36 moisture trap.

It's only visible to me really at the moment but I plan to sort it next year at some point.

Rust is on rear arch.  Its fixable but would need cutting out and doing properly.  I did it last winter with some hammerite stuff but that didnt really help, just slowed it down a bit.  Its certainly not rusting away but its there, and it bothers me.

When you say you did it with hammerite, did you take it down to bare metal?

The rust killers that don't require that will only slow it, not stop it. I'd only consider cutting it out if heavily perforated or you plan to keep the car for ever. Otherwise cut back to bare metal, prime it well, fill it and localised spray over.

Worked for me 20 yrs ago anyway! Back when cars really rusted - my 8 yr old Chevette was riddled with the stuff when I bought it.

I got a wire brush, scrubbed away as much of the loose rust as i could.  Then filled it in with a substance that would supposedly stop the air from getting at it.  I knew it wouldn't fix it for good though.

In the grand scheme of things the rust isnt that bad but thats not the only thing making me want to change.

It never is! Man maths and reasoning always find a way!

You'd need a wire brush attachment on a drill to get it bare.

Like i say.  No logical reason, car still running ok.  But had it for 4 years in Feb, never had a car that long.  I want that next step up in power.  Ka had 60hp(count em!) Mines got 124hp, cooper s would have 170hp.

I would agree, though there isn't much between Citroen/Peugeot really.

Renault I would say are probably the best of the 3!

(as long as we don't mention electrical problems...)  Our Scenic being a case in point...

Well my ex used to have an AX and it was really primitive.  1.0ltre with 4 gears, at a time when ford where selling the mk4 fiesta for comparison.  But in terms of reliability it was solid.

We're probably all a bit irrational in our opinions but they come from somewhere.  My dislike for the other two comes from people i know who have had them and had problems.

Much to my chargrin my dad has just flogged his S class and got an 807

EH?

A number of Peugeot's and Citroen's are made in the same factory and they are generally the same cars underneath.

Other than a duff coilpack, no electrical problems with mine. Admittedly, it took a while to discover it was the coilpack and I was expecting it to be the ECU.

Shit, I just realised, I have a Renault AND a Citroen. I have a whole world of unreliability at hand!

Another thought: RX8?  Even the slowest one will do 60 in 7 seconds, start on the trader at around £5,500, £6000 sees <50k miles.

My brother had an RX-8 for 18 months or so, the higher powered version, it was lovely to drive and was an ideal car for a mix of enjoying his driving and also ferrying his two sprogs around in the back when required.

Fuel consumption wasn't brilliant but the oil consumption, on his car at least, was nowhere near as bad as some of the reams of guff that's been written about it by people with zero experience of the car seems to suggest. It does use it more than more conventional engined stuff but it wasn't scarey.

Parkers indicate your lucky to get 20 to the gallon with mixed/spirited driving.  That would be quite a step down, mine can be quite frugal if needed, on a pure motorway run doing 70 all the way 400 miles is easy to achieve, its only a 40 litre tank too.

Worst ive ever had was about 270 between fills, that HHRT style driving though!

As long as you're not going uphill - the way they drive is a real mix - beautifully balanced, great driving position - everything feels just right the minute you get in, amazingly smooth engine - then comes the lack of torque which spoilt it all for me (and that was on the faster one - which is also the only one to have a 6 speed box) - plus I could never quite decide if I liked the looks or not.

I cam to the conclusion they were a great car for fast, twisty roads taken flat out. As most of my driving at the time was motorways I bought the Saab instead.

They are great value now though - supposedly some have had new engines for some reason but I'm sure the RX8 forum will tell you all you need to know.

Seems like a car with character.  Rarer, cheaper and faster than a mini.

RX8s have an unbelievably foul interior. Shiny plastic is acceptable in a box of Milk Tray, not on a 20k+ sports car.

I don't mind them, but the power/mpg ratio is shocking. A 230 Bhp car doing 20 mpg is ridiculous. I'd be wanting at least 400 Bhp in return for 20 mpg.

If I had to go for a 20mpg Japanese coupe I wouldn't look past the 350Z.

I have a hairy chest

probably a good introduction to RWD too, no "turbo torques" to worry about, in fact very little of them at all?

I have tried to like the styling of them though, and up to now have failed.  The latest Prodrive fettled ones look the best I think...
