I think that is hardly fair. Following Vatanen's representations about the process, the FIA backed down (though they deny it) and it was a secret ballot with unidentifiable ballot papers overseen by a French legal chappie, as approved by Vatanen himself as well as Todt. After all Gorbachev managed to follow the Soviet regime but then get to power and dismantle everything it stood for (sort of).
