Autocar P.65

They have an Audi TT RS on order at £50,115. £50K+ for a frigging blinged up 'Golf'.

I've thought from day one that it's perilously close to RS4/5 money.

It does appear more than a little bit ridiculous. How much of that £50K has been spent on the (extensive) Audi options list?

List is about £43k so not much compared with normal.

Have you seen the latest EVO magazine?
They've added a Porsche Cayenne turbo - obviously a Porsche UK car.
Some of the options added are ludicrous.
Coloured Porsche badge on upgrade alloys - £105.
£482 for a padded steering wheel rim (looks like a normal wheel from the photos) plus £341 for a multifunction steering wheel.
So that's over £800 to upgrade the steering wheel on a £76k list price car.

My Astra has an extra padded wheel and multi-function controls. I think they might have spent £8 on them, though.

I could've had steering wheel controls on my Stilo for an extra £35.

The Alfa and BMW have them as standard and I don't think they'd been invented when the Coupe was built.

They weren't for the radio but my dad's 1938 Talbot had the horn, indicator and dip switches on the wheel's central boss.

Not so much, perhaps, but still (very roughly) about 16% of the list price!

The latest must have object? 50 big ones is a bit steep though.

It's certainly excessive but I'm sure that some of the cars in magazines long term fleets have had a lot more spent on options.
I know for example that Georg Kacher's Audi A5 TDi had fancy paint and interior (plus no doubt loads of other toys) from the Audi exclusive range - the paint alone was something like £3.5k.
I think there was also an A6 that had well over £10k spent on extras.

It did look nice that A5 though.
But 3.5k....................

This just reminded me - Big TC and I spotted a TT-RS broken down on the A725 on Saturday. The stupid twat (the TT-RS driver not Trev) was parked completely on the carriageway when there's a perfectly good verge.

We did play a challenge once on the old Autocar site to see who could spec the most expensive and pointless options list onto a standard car - going for full scamperspec and then some. And Audi A4 something or other won and it seems that Audi are the wallet-emptying-meisters at ripping people off for options.

The TT-RS is a nice looking car, spoiler excepted - I've seen a couple now - but seems to add little to the range besides performance. £10k extra over the good-value TT-S is far too much.

I quite like the TT-RS in the mags/5th Gear test but haven't seen one in the flesh close up. See an S occasionally but I couldn't envisage paying £50k for one....even if I was able to. Probably look at a 4-door M3 or Bathurst for that cash
