So, many plans to go guising folks?

Tonight, we're taking my daughter out for a Thai meal to celebrate her 16th birthday, which is tomorrow.

Tomorrow night, we're off to a Hog-roast-buffeted fancy dress barn-dance thing, in aid of a couple of cancer charities. Several beers will be consumed prior to any dancing being carried out by me!!

Sunday, chill out + visit my mother.

Today - going to the gym and putting some piccies up in Johan's room

Tomorrow - Haloween party with my niece and nephew coming around along with our best friends and their two. Johan has two outfits bought by a friend of ours, which look mega-cute!

Sunday - wife's cousin is coming over with his family

Monday - back to work after two weeks off...

Halloween is a load of American shit and I have nothing to do with it where possible. Thankfully, I'm working nights all weekend, so I'll avoid having to ignore the grabbing little shits trick or treating.

I'm not up to much. I have a bit of sorting round and tidying up to do but other than that I've been feeling tired and run down so a restful weekend will be welcome. I have a stack of DVD's to watch so I might put a couple of those on and enjoy with a glass of wine and I might listen to the Boro match on the radio and see if Gordon Strachen's arrival has made any difference.

Quite a busy weekend for me, as usual working all day Saturday.

In the evening it's my dad's annual bonfire party and this year, much to his pissed off ness, my step mum has decided to make it Halloween themed, I'm in charge of the fireworks, as usual, and there will be copious amounts of alcohol, alcohol, fireworks and a rather close very large bonfire, no health and safety, fantastic!!

Sunday, depending on whether I shake off this bloody cold thing I've had for a week now, will be off to the gym in the morning, GP in the afternoon and then Green Day at Wembley in the evening, really looking forward to seeing them.

As we live up a very dark yard, the kids tend to give our house a miss whilst out guising (which is good....)

Trouble is, with a 6-year old and a small village where all the kids dress up, I won't be able to avoid it totally.....

Nothing at all planned for the rest of the weekend, apart from watching the final GP of the year.

Living in the middle of no where, hopefully I won't be bothered by trick and feckin treating. Humbug.

Not a lot on this weekend. Mrs Scamper is off doing outdoor stuff in the lakes, and i'm left at home cleaning and packing for moving house. May nip down to the local for some lunch time beers on sat, read the papers and have some quiet bloke time in front of a log fire. Nice.

At least tuesday I get to see Gloucester take on the Aussies.

I''ve actually hosted a couple of mixed Hallowe'en/Guy Fawkes parties in the past, which were fun.

But I'm not at all keen on hordes of strangers knocking on my door - which we get a lot of in suburban Southampton.

Thankfully, we're going out to a birthday party which will, no doubt, involve fireworks and pumpkins.

I hate trick or treaters and am quite relieved to be going to my dad's bonfire party on Saturday night as then I don't have the worry of little shits coming to my door and then having my house egged if I tell them to piss off.

The little one is going with a friend and her mum and a few others but I refse to get involved, Tina thinks I'm a miserable sod but I don't ever see her going along!!

At least most kids take it vaugely seriously these days and make an effort - they are even escorted by parents. When I were a lad, it was just an excuse to go on the rampage. Was not really interested in getting a few sweeties. I blame the parents.

I don't really want to be a party pooper but you can't really blame the Yanks or even George Bush for Halloween as (as far as I know) it predates "America" by a year or two.

As far as I know Halloween dates back at least to Celtic pre England times and the name "Halloween" is (again - as far as I know) derived from whatever it was called by the inhabitants of the British Isles in those ancient pre Roman times. I don't know the history of Halloween in Europe but certainly in the British isles it's an old custom linked to other worldly activities and feasting.

Trick or treating may be an Americanism (I don't know) but the dressing up as frightening things, stuffing yourself with food and bonfire parts of halloween are all very old customs.

I've just Googled it as I was interested in the old British name and this is what Wiki has to say, I know Wiki isn't the accurate respoatory of all human knowledge but this seems about right from what I remember (not from being there but from books! I know I'm old but not quite that...) Anyway, Wiki says...

"The term Halloween, originally spelled Hallowe’en, is shortened from All Hallows' Even – e'en is a shortening of even, which is a shortening of evening. This is ultimately derived from the Old English Eallra Hālgena ǣfen."

I think Halloween was the original festival to pass the shortening of the nights and marked the end of the time of plenty over the summer and autumn. Animals that would not be able to make it through the winter were slaughtered and the meat preserved, food was stockpiled for the long winter ahead. It was the last chance to party before hunkering down. The next festival was then Michaelmas, when the December equinox was something to celebrate as the nights got lighter from there on.

But course now that we can get strawberries flown in from Kenya all year and have electric light, central heating and freezers, the point has rather been lost. So it has been reinvented as some god-awful consumer / kids fest, for which I do blame the Americans.

Mind you, the Vatican have said that it should not be celebrated as it will encourage satanism, so on that basis maybe I should join in. Anything to piss offthe Catholic church

Halloween pre dates the Christian church and Satanism. It is a little annoying when either are linked and although there is an other world aspect to Halloween it's nothing to do with Satan who is a Christian character.

The Vatican should therefore do some Googling and shut up or maybe turn their attention to something more useful like stamping out kiddie fiddling amongst their employees.

Might put on my Misfits skeleton t-shirt (the white bits glow in the dark) and if any guiser comes to the door I'll answer it in that and sneeze all over them.

We will be hiding in the rear of a darkened house to avoid our doorbell being rung.

Even if it does I will probably ignore it. Either that or go out for a curry!

It should be quiet with regard to trick or treat tomorrow as the council are having their firework display but we will have to stay in to keep the dogs calm. We can see most of it from our back garden in any case.

I have a dressage competition on Sunday and I am doing three tests. I can't help feeling I may have bitten off more than I can chew but we will have to see.

Saturday I hope to be off to Regent Street to see the Councours d'Elegance for the London to Brighton veteran car rally that takes place on Sunday.... weather-dependent of course. Last year it wa a bit of a wash-out on the Saturday and the forecast for tomorrow isn't wonderful at the moment.
Sunday's weather is looking pretty grim for those old cars too, heavy rain and wind lashing at up to 70mph is expected. I shall hopefully be at home watching the Grand Prix then, however

Yep. 2nd, 5th and 4th respectively and I made a mistake in the second test - knew as soon as I had done it. Very pleased with that.

I got soaked but the wind didn't pick up until later this afternoon - driving back up the A1 in the wind was tiring but we are only 20 minutes away so not too bad.
