Slightly stolen from the Autocar site but pricing for the Golf R is on the VW website.
Starting at £28,930 for the manual, fuck me that's alot of money, what exactly does it give you over the GTi apart from a bit more power? _________________ Mummy, Daddy, Sissy, Sassy Baby. |

I note the Scirocco R is a couple of grand cheaper, but both are overpriced. _________________

| The Scirocco is only FWD which explains the lower cost. Both ridiculous prices, though! Car prices are going rather mental, aren't they? A 3.0TDI A5 Sportback can be got up to nearly 40 grand quite easily on their configurator. |

It is rather expensive, especially compared to the A3. But I rather think that most cars imported to the UK from the EU will go up significantly soon, once the manufacturers realign their prices based on the exchange rate.
That said, if I really wanted a new hot hatch and thought that the Golf R was the one I liked the most, and had the money, I'd probably still fork out for it over and above (say) the Megane RS or Leon Cupra R.

But you could just get a Cupra and fit more agreeable suspension and STILL save money. Either that or just chip a regular GTI. _________________

I've never been a huge fan of the S3, but with the demise of the 130, a Sportback for £28k which comes with Leather and Xenons as std, sounds much better than either the Golf R or a £29k Megane. _________________

Where are you getting £29k for a Megane? - the 250 is listed at £21995 or £22995 depending on which model you opt for and they'll come well kitted out - perhaps metallic at £400 might be all you'll need, and even when the 225 was a brand new model, it was offered with a £1000 discount virtually as you walked through the door.
Bumping it up to £29k would be as daft as the MINI I mentioned on here a few weeks back that was bumped up to £30k. _________________ Andrew L |

The Meg can be got up to £29K easily, but I don't think it's the sort of car where you'd want to do that.
If you take a £22,995 standard car and add:
Metallic paint £395
Cup Chassis £1950
Sat nav £1600
Anthracite x-pack £150
19" alloys £500
Xenons £750
Sunroof £400
Parking sensors £400
Renaultsport Monitor £300
2 tone leather £100
Spare wheel £100
Folding mirrors £150
...it comes to £29,790
Wonder if the Golf will come with all that kit for the same price? |

The £29k was mentioned in another thread.
Going off Simons list, then it's a £27,500 ish car with a decent spec (no sat nav). _________________

Eh?
Assume people would want the Cup chassis on the basis everyone thinks they are wheelmen, add the spare wheel and depending upon preference the metallic paint (make mine solid red) and that comes to much less than the Golf aRsewipe _________________ Shame your mind don't shine like your possessions |

OK. I've just looked at the Spec and the 250 is very well equipped as std, just adding metallic and visibility pack would probably be enough, so £24,140. However, add the Cup pack and it would be £26,090.
Waiting for an ex demo or lightly used one would make sense, but it's not a car to buy new imo, even if they knock £1k off.
The Golf makes even less sense, but I'm guessing it will be a much nicer car to spend time in. _________________

Metallic paint £395
Cup Chassis £1950 - What's wrong with the standard chassis ?
Sat nav £1600 - £1600 !!!!, buy a map and then get a prostitute to read it out loud (and suck you off) every time you go somewhere new.
Anthracite x-pack £150 - WTF ?
19" alloys £500 - Pointless, especially if you've just spread the starfish for the cup pack
Xenons £750
Sunroof £400 - Sunroof !!! - what the fuck for ???
Parking sensors £400 - Stop being an airheaded cock receptical - it's a poxy hatchback not a fucking Phaeton.
Renaultsport Monitor £300 - What does this monitor exactly ? - " today you have four cylinders - just like yesterday you cheap bastard ".
2 tone leather £100 - 2 tone anything is shit
Spare wheel £100
Folding mirrors £150 - again, why would anyone ever need this function ?.
£20k gets you a new Focus ST2 that just been felt up by Mountune - why would you even darken Renault's door ? _________________ Previous convictions :

Some 2 tone records are OK
Xenons - yes every time
Metallic - yes if I liked a metallic colour
Folding mirrors - I specced these on the M3, use them when getting the car in and out of the garage, makes life easier in the stupid narrow modern house garages
The rest - totally agree, pointless wank. _________________ Drifting through life |

With a hyperhatch like that, it's definitely not a car to buy ex-demo or lightly used, IMO. It will probably have been driven in a cockish fashion by every Tom, Dick, Harry, Barry and Wayne who finds themselves in the driver's seat with the keys in their sweaty mitt.
I'd definitely buy new if I was looking to keep it for say 3 years. _________________ Drifting through life |

No problem with metallic or xenons
I've got a stupid modern garage door and my fat S60 goes in just fine with it's mirrors erect
BTW, I'd much rather catch a mirror on the garage door frame than a body panel. _________________ Previous convictions :

Agree - but the good thing (IMO) with the folding mirrors is that you can line the edge of the mirrors up with the edge of the garage opening on the way in, and then fold and unfold the mirrors as they pass the garage entrance.
Et voila - enough room to open the door to get out, once you're in.
My car is just over 2 metres wide with mirrors erect. It's quite a tight fit into the entrance _________________ Drifting through life |

I bought an ex demo 130i...... No problems in three years due to the above mentioned idiots!! The dealership used the same rules for the 130 as they did the M cars in terms of staff useage (they couldn't!) and only accompanied test drives were allowed.
The Megane is not a hyperhatch, it's only got 4 cylinders _________________

Won't the golf be a better drive than the S3 though, ignoring our fetish for leather, sat nav and feckin extended light packs?
In tems of value for money isn't it worth saving dosh and buying a clio cup over the 250? I know GZ would. |
