Have just been asked to sign and return the registration form for my new 440i (putting it onto my personal plate) so it is starting to feel real and exciting. Currently scheduled to take delivery on 16 December, so that makes it an excellent 40th birthday present to myself (I turn 40 a couple of days later…).

I have to say that so far (fingers crossed that don't I jinx it) I am impressed with the speed of delivery. I only confirmed the order on 26 October, so will be less than two months flash-to-bang for a factory order.

At dad's funeral last week, one of my cousins was bemoaning Audi delays. He ordered a new Q7 e-tron (V-6 diesel plus battery power) earlier in the year and traded his old Q7 in some weeks ago. No loan car supplied in the interim, and his car should have been built 2 weeks ago.  However it turns out that there is an issue with production and has now been informed that production is unlikely to re-start until some time in Q1-2017.  He's trying to prise a loan vehicle out of the dealer now.....

I'm not anticipating that problem. In fact I expect I shall be Billy Two BMWs for a month or two.

That's very good going, excited for you! I'm seeing more of them around, not large petrol flavour but generally they seem to be more out there.

They've maybe all got the same aircon gas problem as the TTRS.

Pleased for you Racing - let me know if you are down this way visiting your relative (whose house I cycled past at lunchtime today). I would like a go in one of the "40i" BMW's because they'll certainly be on the list next time, if I decide to be more sensible.

Out of interest, did you consider the CLA 45 AMG?

Will do.

Yes, and I test-drove one: http://themotor.myfastforum.org/about22168.html

I was talking today to someone who has an F30 335i Touring and who has tried the 340i, and he reckoned that the 40i is quite an improvement on the 35i.

Ok, now officially exciting. Car has arrived at dealership. Not sure that I can collect it this weekend but I should get to at least see it on Saturday when I go to drop off the new winter wheels I have acquired for it.

I also ran the VIN through an on-line decoder to check the build details and it looks like the spec is correct (I was never sure the last minute change from walnut trim to anthracite fineline trim went through, but pleased to see that it has).

So it looks like it will be possible to collect it tomorrow, which is great news.

I confess that I have blown decidedly hot and cold on this since placing the order. I am going to be sad to see the M135i go (as and when it eventually does). I've never kept a "normal" car for anything like this long (50 months so far) and I've grown rather attached to it. I've even tried to persuade my mother that she should buy it instead of getting something else (she declined politely). But now that the new car is actually nearly here, the excitement takes over and I have banished the doubts. Whisper it, but I'm kind of looking forward to having a car with a decent automatic box for most of the driving I do these days. I was very put-off by the SMG in the M5, plus I just couldn't square the notion of a hot hatch with an auto box, but now I think I am ready. Plus kind of looking forward to having a good-looking car again, and definitely looking forward to having a bigger one.

Excellent news and you get the weekend to try it out and check it properly.

I will admit that I have specced a 440i GC myself on Broadspeed and the near £10K discount makes it very attractive.

That is good news, both the slightly early collection date and that you're now blowing hot.

No need to be shy about the auto, it's an excellent gearbox and you won't regret having it I'm sure. I'd still want a manual in a sports car, but it will suit the 440i perfectly.

Great stuff. Nothing wrong with autos; they're a world away from the old Borg-Warner three speed slush-a-matics of old.

Late to the party but I actually had a 440i GC for the past couple of days and I was quite impressed with it. Very smooth but also a nice grunt and lovely punch when you put your foot down.

Hope you get many miles of enjoyment with it.

I'm betting you will love the ZF box. I have not generally noticed the new 8-speed one be much better than the older 6 speed, but both are simply superb gearboxes with almost a telepathic ability to know what you want, especially when you work out how to get the best out of them. The clever ZF people (and BMW/Jaguar) have spent a lot of time ensuring that even quite subtle differences in how you treat the loud pedal yield different results. Want to kick down quickly but only use part throttle? Press is swiftly but only a short way. Want it to stay in gear, but use a big throttle opening, very slowly open the taps a long way. Its all very clever...

Forgot about that CLA45 road test - I still love the looks of them and the A class, especially inside, but I doubt I'd go there for obvious engine related reasons, unless fuel went silly expensive. Even then I drove 200 miles today and averaged almost 31 MPG, how much do I really care?

440iGC is probably close to, if not, the best real world car around.

In previous years I'd have said a 330i/335i Coupe but the GC keeps the good looks and add's Hatchback practicality, whilst avoiding being as big a a 6GC (which I also love).

I'll confess to having looked for one second hand and been tempted to see what deal I could get on one but my common sense head says they are still to new.

A result I've been looking at S5 Sportbacks instead. Not an SUV but ticks all the other boxes.

Enjoy the 440, and....pics please
